In the source pictures, the color of the ground is effected by the overcast sunlight also, that is washing it out some. Not sure if that would be a momentary color effect or is "permanent" due to nuke dust in the atmosphere etc. Just a thought.

Small leaves and succulents are the order of the day for desert plants as former user said, but you don't nescessarily need to hold back on the colours and volumes of planlife unless you want the instantly recognisable sereotyped desert.

bright green marks a watersource or the rain season

and there is always a fine dust layer on everything
