Movie "It happened here"
« on: 01 August 2010, 10:28:39 AM »
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but I just caught a movie on Netflix called “it happened here” about England under Germany occupation during WWII.  Not and action flick, very much a human drama and a brilliant piece of film making.   One should also consider that the film was made in 1965 by two teenager film makers (which blew my mind)  Well worth watching especially for those who are into the VBCW gaming.

I saw it earlier this year when I borrowed the DVD from my University library. Rather interesting and very nicely made; costumes and setting looked great (although that Jagdpanther with the Bobby cycling by was a bit OTT).

The overall plot is rather sedate, IMHO. Not a bad thing, though, since it focuses on the "small people", and the inconspicuous way in which the horrors of the War and Nazi occupation creep into their lives (the sanatorium part I found rather harrowing).

A good movie. I'd recommend it, too.

There's a BBC series called "Island at War," about one of the British Isles being occupied by the Germans.  I've only seen the first disk, but it was well done, and might offer similar ideas.
Check out THE CROGAN ADVENTURES, a historical adventure graphic novel series available from your local bookstore or comic shop (or, of course, Amazon).  I make 'em.

It's an excellent film - the uniforms were all sourced and checked by Andrew Mollo, who went on to design the uniforms for the Empire in Star Wars, among other things. :D

The ending is quite good too; and there's plenty of stuff to wargame.

The interesting thing to note about this excellent movie is that Brownlow and Mollo did it on a shoestring budget with most, if not all of the actors, as amateur volunteers, although the actor playing the doctor friend of the heroine, is actually the guy who played the older Annakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, Sebastian Shaw. It was all filmed on location, and they sourced most of the props and uniforms themselves. The Jagdpanther is a bit of an anachronism, but its only a minor point. It took a few years to make too, and never really got the exposure it deserved. The newsreel excerpts were really well done. One of the few movies to present a well thought out "what if" scenario. "Fatherland" with Rutger Hauer isn't bad, but the setting is not really the main subject of that movie.

They will not control us,
