I seem to remember Dirk Pitt walking from Japan to Hawaii in a reinforced diving suit or something similarly bonkers in a Cussler I read as a young lad. :-D

That was the book Floating Dragon, if I remember correctly.

I certainly enjoy the antics and adventures of Dirk Pitt as well. Have a number of his books too. Thanks muchly for bringing about this note of a new series from Cussler. I had seen the new novel in the shops yesterday, but for whatever reason hadn't snatched it up, myself.

Everything is better with lizardmen.

With respect gentlemen!
You all seem to be missing the point...

Isn't this a 'pulp' forum?  Isn't everyone a true pulp fan?  I wonder, after reading through your many comments regarding the credibility, plausibility etc, of Cussler's plots.

I have read hundreds of pulp tales (almost exclusively from the 20's and 30's) which span the spectrum from horror/occult, mystery, adventure, Easternm Peril, Ancient mysteries...etc.  And they ALL STRETCH CREDIBILITY and PLAUSIBILITY!  And that's the point.  Unfettered gratuitous fun!

I think Cussler's works are a true representation of a modern adaptation of the pulps!

I for one love every tale he has ever written.  Of course, Dirk wioll always get the girl, overcome insane plots and adversity, and save the world from unspeakable chaos in the bargain.
What more do you want from a novel?

Next, everyone will be lambasting the quality and merit of the other God of Pulps - Edgar Rice Burroughs!  Egads!

Just wanted to offer my opinion.

No mean intent meant in my post.  I just found it so damned queer and amusing that we (and I include myself) get so focused on expectations from fictional entertainment...hhh

I love this groups and the minds that dwell within....

Never read Cussler, however Elmore Leonard is excellent.  I really enjoyed Rum Punch and Maximum Bob.  His writing is fantastic.  The characterization is slightly campy but enjoyable.
This is my boomstick!

I've read most of them and, well....I keep reading (on and off). Even pulpiness has variable quality, and CC's writing is no exception. There are some really good ideas mixed in with "bumping into another life saving discovery of and old crash/wreck etc" at the critical moment. Just finished "Arctic... somthing or other " a few days ago, barking, good fun in parts but contrived coincidences just get a bit lazy. I'm not even sure what his son and daughter were doing of relevance to the plot in the book. His earlier "works" were of much more consistent quality (albeit pulp quality) that made them more enjoyable. I particluraly liked Vixen 03, Deep Six, Night Probe and Cyclops.

I just cringe every time he meets CC. I ususally skip those pages. Whats worse is he usually says somthing like "That guy seemed familiar..." Not like he has saved your life half a dozen times or anything!

But i'm still reading...
