19th Century Spain and long arms
« on: February 28, 2011, 04:50:25 AM »
I see (WHKMLA and WarScholar) Spain is involved in a "ton" of wars in the 1800's -

Latin America Wars of Independence

Spanish Civil War of 1820-1823

Franco-Spanish war 1823

Spanish Invasion f Mexico 1829

First Carlist War 1833 – 1840

Spanish Civil War 1840 – 1843

Sulu Campaign of 1844

Matiner's War/Second Carlist War 1847 – 1849

Sulu again 1850 -1851

Spanish revolution 1854

Spanish – Moroccanwar 1859

Spanish – Peruvian ar 1864 – 1866

Spanish – Chilean War 1865 – 1866

Cuban rebellion 1868 – 1878

Third Carlist War 1872 – 1876

Sulu Conquest 1876

Rif War/Melilla War/Margallo War 1893 – 1894

War of Cubam Independence 1895 – 1898

Philippine Insurrection 1896 -1898

SAW 1898

Whew!

So, after that background, my questions about Spanish army weaponry is –

When did the rifled musket pretty much replace the smoothbore musket?

When did the breechloader style weaponry essentially replace the muzzle loaders?

When did semi-automatic generally replace single shot rifles?

Gracias,

Glenn

On 30-November-1892, the Spanish military accepted the Fusil Mauser Español Modelo 1892 (the 7 x 57 mm 92/93 Mauser) as its official military rifle.  This was a five round clip, bolt action rifle.  It would have taken a while for older weapons to be replaced, but by the Spanish-American War of 1898, all front line units were fielding this rifle.

Before the adoption of the Mauser, the standard infantry rifle was the Remington
