Texturing houses before painting
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:47:33 PM »
Please advise how to texture houses under an uneven surface before painting?

I've tried to mix glue for ceramic tiles with water - nothing happened, everything crumbled

I cover the wall surface with MMD fast drying Green Putty.  The amount applied depends on how much texture you want.  Let it dry and sand with fine sandpaper.  Practice on something you don't care about to get a feel for how much you want to apply before sanding to get the desired result.

hum, if you like to have a fine and smooth result you can do what suggested: a bit of acrylic paste or various putties are good for a simple texturizing!

if the texturized part is inside, you can use some decorative paper as well.

and if you want to texturize cracked walls, you can still use the salt solution, but it shall be used with aerograph.

it will crack and you will have rubble every time you touch it!

better syntetic-acrylic stuff... unless you have a cardboard base... in that case use PVA glue with the plaster and you will be ok!

Something that works rather well is mixing wood glue with a commercial filler like Porion or  Polyfilla (the grey textured one, not the white) in a 50/50 mix. After mixing gradually add some water until you get a creamy mass. Spreads easily, fills any uneven patches and is extremely strong. You can actually sand it afterwards with a powertool.
If you desire a rough finish dab it with a sponge when still wet. Dries in about 15 minutes.

Panic, Chaos and Disorder. My job here is done

I'm interested in this, where do I find those filler you're talking about? Any "general" name of that stuff (not commercial ones I mean, so that I can buy them in the Banana Republic where I live...)?

Commercial names do indeed differ from country to country (Tetrion, Porion, Polyfilla etc)
In your local DIY shop they should have a  wall repair paste with similar qualities.
Some are very smooth- meant for indoor plasterwork repair, others are slightly rougher for filling cracks in cement or even concrete.
The latter is very often greyish- white in color, stronger and has a slightly sandy texture. Usually comes in a resealable plastic tub or box.

If offered a choice between ready mixed and one you have to mix yourself (simply stirring in fact) go for the latter.
And BTW I live in a banana republic as well. We aren't even capable of forming a decent government and that for nearly a year now ! lol

We're in the same boat so...  :'(

But about the plaster-like thing I think I understood what it is. I'll try it out, thanks!

Liquitex and Golden make acrylic artist's mediums with sand texture.  I'm sure they are more expensive by volume than the wall repair stuff, but they work wonderfully over foamcoare and cardboard.  They are essentially thick acrylic paint, so they should stick anywhere paint would stick.
