Great War docs online
« on: 09 July 2011, 04:29:30 AM »
Having bought Mud & Blood a few weeks back, I went looking for more reading material, and discovered that with a bit of hunting, there was all sorts of interesting stuff at the Internet Archive site. That can be a hard site to navigate, though, so I started saving links, realized people might be interested in what I was finding, and decided to blog the results of my explorations:

Great War Resources on The Warbard.

Short version, for those who never click links: lots of good stuff, including PDF versions of some of the actual tactical guides used to train officers and men. Lots of interesting period colour and details that might serve to make scenarios more interesting, too!

I love those original manuals and memoirs. One of my favorites is "How to Live at the Front" written in 1917 by Brit Captain Hector Macquarrie to share some practical advice with us Yanks. It covers everything from the dangers of fraternizing with those French girls to how to take care of your horse at the front lines!

I actually have the download of "How to Live at the Front" as well, was going to include it in the article, then didn't for some reason... there's lots of "advice for the Yanks now they've realised there's a war on" books, but "How to Live" is unique, all the random advice and moral tone instead of the pseudo-official-military-manual outlook of most of the rest of that genre!
