Cossacks in German service?
« on: 02 July 2011, 01:08:09 PM »
I thought I would never be interested in such a thing as the WWII cossacks in German service... :-I If someone had told me that, I would have laughed  lol

However... they fought against the French Resistance and the French SAS in 1944 in Brittany. I was planning to build a 28mm traditionnal Breton little village so it could be an interesting idea for some action in it.

So I looked for miniatures but nobody makes these cossacks in 28mm? (Artizan Koschei's cossacks are fantasy).

I can use some German soldiers miniatures because at the end of the war many of these cossacks  wore a mixture of German uniforms etc. But local witnesses have written that some of them still had cossack fur caps, large riding pants, etc, and a few still carried their sabre.

You might want to look up the 1st Cossack Division or the XV SS Cossack Cavalry Corps on wiki. And a quick google search came up with some pics that show cossacks in German service.

This thread might be useful too.
Hope that is of some help to you.

I'm pretty sure BAM did some though I don't know if they are currently available from Warlord Games.

Thanks guys  :)  All this is very surprising and interesting.

And have you seen these photos of a French re-enactor in replicas of Osttruppen uniforms:

I would not try to do such conversions of lead metal figures because I can not do it so well as you did. If I cannot find some cossacks minis I will probably use other German troops that were in the same area.

If you play NUTS!, the "Clash of Titans" book for the Eastern Front has rules for cavalry and cavalry units, and the Stalingrad campaign book has stats for these Cossacks and other local Axis-allied units.
