the shanty project part 4
« on: 23 January 2012, 01:35:57 PM »
i have taken some time away from this project for several reasons, one is that me and stewart have had a rethink on how to use these shantys and the way the third world games/rules are going we would end up with too complex a build, so we have decided to use the boards we have originaly made for the african bush games and build a completely new shanty/favela town in the future.
i have made my first board into a bush shopping centre, complete with 2 supermarkets, a ladies and gents hairstylist, a car parts shop,
a health centre, travel agent and a fast food cafe and here is the results:-

this is the tesco store:-
this is the asda store:-
the travel agent:-
the health centre:-
the fast food cafe:-
the car parts shop;-
and the hair stylists:-
the beauty with these shanty towns is that you can use a whole load of junk collected over the years and it all fits, no mater what you use, even the wrong scale stuff will not be noticable and non of it needs to be neat and tidy, the more out of shape it is the better.

as you can see they also suffer from graphiti as well as us,

all shantys are from the s&s models range, roofs are a combination of s&s and odd bits, all graphiti, signs ect are home made decals, and painting is mostly waterbased paint, wash is gw sepia and my own concoction of brown.
only another 2 boards to go.
as usual more pics here:-

Really nice work Shaun, it's an impressive build  but I'm not sure why you refer to it as a shanty/favela. These look pretty good for an African setting but don't look very Brazilian.

Favela is a pretty specific term in a geographic sense (along with favelado it's  increasingly seen by many inhabitants of these communities as a perjorative termthese days  too). If you are looking to model a typical favela/ comunidade then you to do a bit more research. The bigger comunidades  in Rio, SP and elsewhere have a very different look and the typical building materials are cement and terracotta, breeze block style, bricks.  That said there are poor areas in Brazil where you can see a preponderance of wooden shacks, Alagados in Salvador being a good example but in Salvador such communities are rarely referred to as 'favelas'.

Anyway really nice work, looks like it would be a great setting for a game.

I very much like the way you've got away from the rather monochromatic palette most of us tend to use for shanties.

But no shoe shops?  The ladies will be so disappointed!
Back from the dead, almost.

thanks for the comments, we are using the term favela as a merely generic term for a whole load of this and other types of third wotld terrain we are working on.
the actual favela project has been put on hold at present, and we are looking into some new terrain boards with some height to it.
we are also getting made some breeze block buildings more suitable for s/america.
more to come

That is just awesome!  I love it.   I've spent a tiny bit of time in central, south american and carribean crap holes and this catches the flavor.  I can almost smell the roasting iguana!

Very, very cool.
I have wanted to do some shanties for a long time.
Just too many other projects right now.

That looks very cool.  :-*
Looks like a fun board to play on as well.
You really captured the feel of real life shanty towns.

I've no words for how much I love the MTN sign - pure Africa, love it. Had to share that one with the wife. And the world cup sign as well.

If you can find one in scale a VW Citi (what was sold as the Rabbit in the US years ago) to squeeze into an ally and/or a beat up kombi (VW microbus or indian knock-off) to careen wildly through the 'streets' w no regard for law, safety, or physics would really add to the scene.
