John Hawkwood

I am currently reading Saunders book on John Hawkwood and feel an urge to paint him. Problem is to find a 28mm miniature with his characteristic headgear. I would be grateful for any suggestions of miniatures or heads that can be chopped and used for conversion. Thanks!:

Have you tryed the Perry brothers WOTRs line?

Try Navigator, not the best of quality but I'm sure you could head swap if neccessary. There's another company on the tip of my tongue but thus far it's still stuck in the murk  .

The WoR Perry Range doesn't have anything suitable if you want his exact hat. BTW, wasn't that painting of Hawkwood done post mortem? If so the styles of the day would have changed, probably dramatically. I can see him wearing a lillipipe (a sort of inverted hood) if that's any help?

The Perry Agincourt to Orleans range might be better armour wise but no hats available. I know Claymore Castings are doing some character types and their range contemporary for Hawkwoods career.

The armour on the chap at the top is about 100 years in advance of what Hawkwood would have had the opportunity to wear.

Just one of those hsitorical things that I, being somewhat obsessed by Late Medieval Warfare wouldn't go for. Having said that, there's nothing to stop you doing it any which way you like.

The hat is wrong too. What happened was the artist who did the image of Hawkwood's tomb based the image off of the norm of his time, as mentioned about 100 years after Hawkwood's career. The figures of the Perry Agincourt range would be appropriate (as long as you stuck to those without the grand bascinet, in otherwise only the ones who had mail drapes on their helmets). Any mid to late 14th century figures would be appropriate. The top image on page 148 of Saunder's book is your best bet as it is believed to be one of the few contemporary depictions of Hawkwood. I would use the second figure from the left of this Perry set as he is wearing what is appropriate for late 14th century armour and carries a baton of command.

The one on foot, though you could use the mounted one as an unarmoured version of John. Many of those ones you linked would work. Just stay away from the ones with plate neck defenses as they're an early 15th century addition. Also you'd probably need to file off the rings worn on their helmets as that also is an early 15th century addition.

The hat condoittiere from 1st corps linked really doesn't fit. He is dressed as a mid 15th century man at arms would be and as previously mentioned John Hawkwood was late 14th.
