John Mollo, RIP

John Mollo, author of a number of books on military history and uniforms, and costume designer/consultant on several films, has died in a care home in Wiltshire, England, on October 25th.  He was 86 and the older brother of Andrew and Boris.  I would suspect that many of us have at least one of his books (probably either the AWI or SYW uniform tomes, illustrated by Malcolm McGregor and published by Blandford) and have certainly seen at least one of the films he worked on (which started with "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and went via "Star Wars", "Alien", "Revolution" and "Zulu Dawn", through to the "Hornblower" series).

A talented man.  Rest in peace.

I thought I would post this on the "Age of the Big Battalions" and "Future Wars" fora, as they cover almost all of the periods that he worked on.

That’s a shame. Yes I do have a few books by the Mollos. Not sure they’re his though. Mainly WW2, so probably Andrew.

Tis a shame, I have seen the SYW books and have one or two of those old Blandfords. Still 86 isn't a bad innings.

Sad news.  I have at least the AWI book and several of his movies he worked on.  Two some might not recall: the Brandon Lee Jungle Book and the Charlie Sheen Musketeers movie.  I did not know he worked on Star Wars so that is news to me.  Yes, 86 is a good, long life.

I own several of his earlier reference books,very nice books they are too.

RIP after 86 fruitfull and hopefully happy years. I still remember my quest for his uniforms of the AWI and they joy when I finally got it. Still in my collection of course and extremely helpfull.

Indeed, very sad news.... I can only hope there is happiness beyond for him.

He was a more than significant influence on my appreciation and understanding of the Crimean campaign thanks to his and Boris' Into the valley of Death. His contribution will continue on after him. Thanks John Mollo.
