Small Scale Bamboo Ideas?
« on: 02 June 2012, 02:42:14 AM »
Does anyone know of a natural or man-made item that looks like scaled down bamboo stalks for 28mm or 15mm? The segments of actual bamboo are too long to look right no matter what the thickness. I've found some kits made for scale modeling but they don't really look right to me, relying too much on foliage and not the segmented look of bamboo.

Sorry if this has been covered already.

GW had a bamboo toot in their How to Build War Games Terrain.  As I recall it is painting shush-kebob skewers.  Their example looked alright.
Hope that gives you a place to look.

These guys have something that looks fairly nice, but their shipping cost is prohibitive (€16?) and I haven't been able to find it elsewhere.

Hello,

postage is expensive from France for overseas parcels as they are quaranties damage and losses and there is a tracking number.

After, I think a solution for packages under 2 pounds but nothing is guaranteed.

Tomytec used to produce N-scale plastic bamboo for Japanese model railways, but I haven't seen any available online for a long time.

Here's an idea for bamboo sticks. Not mine, but Atacam's, over on the Bushido forums.

Cocktail sticks scored to make the segments. Can be a bit of work if you need lots and lots, of course.

That looks like it might be what I need! Using various sized dowels and cocktail sticks should work.

I'm making several kinds of primordial plants for a game based on pre-human Earth and I wanted to use bamboo to represent some early plant species.

I'm also going to go out this summer and try to find and dry some horsetail plants which should scale down nicely once dried and painted.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Glad to be of any help!

Using ordinary sized grass to simulate giant grass -of course! Brilliant! Why have I never thought of that.
I'll see what sorts of grass I can find hereabouts with the right segmentation.

These are 1/35th scale so would be pretty large trunks in gaming scales but might still be of use. Especially since I'll be chopping them up.
