Looking for spanish civilians 1930s
« on: 11 October 2012, 08:03:39 PM »
As we currently have a scw revival in our gaming group I'm looking for spanish civilians from the 1930s.

Can I use the perry civilian packs from their carlist war range for rural spain or is it already to oldfashioned?
(As I'm not going to build a whole city, but maybe a small village or a big farm, I'm more looking for villagers or peasants then citizens)

Does anybody have a tip where I could get other fitting minis?

You might at a push get away with most of the female civilians, but not the males and depending on where your village is. A better bet would be some of the Musketeer civilians from their Interwar range, though these might be too 'urban'. 'Wild West' civilians might be close to the mark in some cases too, but avoid the obvious 'bowler' and 'stetson' hats. Small straw Sombreros were quite common in Andalucia, I'm not so sure about elsewhere.

Trousers and shirts, usually those with removable collars (and largely worn without), along with neck scarves, were almost universal dress in the countryside. Womens' skirts or dresses were commonly worn 'modestly' to the ankles in rural areas, but were shorter in the cities, where more 'modern' clothes were common.

Thank you Arlequín.

I like the Musketeers but not for my project. They don't look like peasants or villagers to me.

I think I will have to look for the Old West Minis then.

I don´t think the carlist´s war civilians would do it, maybe you can look for mafia-like figures or such, or Old West, like Arlequín said, but without the old west huts and "boinas" instead of it ;)
Here a pair of photos:

In the villages:

Old people in the villages continue wearing these caps ("Boina")

In the cities:

(In this photo people wears typic catalan footwear: "espardenyes". Like in the Perry´s valencian Carlists  ::))

Barcelona in the 30´s:

I think they could look the part wihtout the weapons:

Maybe some of the Perry´s ACW rioters could do it aswell, with some modifications??

Interesting thread!

West Wind has a pack of French WW2 French civilians that is similar to the above photos. Generally I would think that most Western European civilians would look similar during the 20th century(?)

There are several packs of armed civilians that would look good. Maybe I should say that I'm searching for unarmed/non fighting figures and I think they are quite hard to find.  :?

Don't disregard the option of chopping of a hand or two and replace them with an open hand. Victory Games have great hands for that purpose  ;)

You could replace the rifles with farm tools perhaps?

If it is the only option I will perhaps do that. But I'm lazy and if I can find fitting figures pout of the box I will probably prefer them! ;)

Yeah there are two sets of unarmed civs in the Perry's Mafeking range, the one pictured above and on one other set. No Females in that set i am afraid.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.
