Spaghetti should work surely?

Those kids pasta pictures seem to last for ever without suffering from humidity issues and they are just pasta shapes and PVA and glitter!

Maybe overbuild it to avoid any 'sag' issues, or stick in some steel rods for added stability?

Could be worth an experiment but most likely the sagging would not occur until after several months.

Hammers old chap, I would be inclined to use clear plastic cocktail stirrers (and when typing that, why do I automatically think of Malamute?!).  Here's an example:

Have you considered Vallejo Water Effects as well, it's really useful for teasing into wave tops and therefore, perhaps, jets and splashes.

Could you accelerate test by storing the test piece in the bath room or on the radiator (heating system). That might be getting a bit science workshop! It would be really cool to see something built out of a material as humble as spaghetti, and I quote "...the task you set for yourself should put you to the test."!
Saving the last bullet... just in case.

Styrene rod in various diameters seems like the best option. Plenty of hobby shops in North America have the stuff, but on your end maybe Antenocitis has some?

Ah, you mean plastic toothpicks, not stirrers. To short , I fear, plus for the steam column I am going for a painted effect, not transparent. Still, an useful tip which I will file away for the future.

Oh, I know where to get hold of styrene rods, I am looking for a cheaper alternative than the common hobby brands. I need quite a few...

I picked a poor example but this one should be better: not cocktail sticks but cocktail swizzlers: they are much longer.  No worries if no use tho

 ;) :)

And I should have realised from your painted base that you are going for a painted effect....... Feeling kind of silly now!  ::)

The world's leading pasta modeller Sergey Pakhomov,  :o , has to store his at a certain temperature and humidity to stop them spoiling, but he doesn't seem to seal nor paint his.

I'd be tempted to use a variety of non-food items, plastic piping for plumbing, wooden dowel, and just a little of modeller's plastic rod. Good Luck!

I have stumbled across a bit of a sourcing problem. I need plenty of thin, spaghetti-like rods; various diameters bute  none wider than  1,5 mm, plastic, wood or metal and preferably cheap. Evergreen plastics seem like the expensive option. I have considered lacquering actual spaghetti but I am sure they will eventually sag due to humidity. Any suggestions?

Do you know any welders? See if they have MIG or TIG wire offcuts or even just a few whole TIG rods you can use.
