About Asgard
« on: 18 February 2013, 01:55:56 PM »
Hi,
I'm reviewing the map of the Naran world, in view of a future subdivision of Naran’s armies between two periods, before and after the Flood. In the first period we will put the classical armies of ancient era (Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, etc.), while the post-diluvian period will be the late medieval era.

To define my new maps I have some problems with the realms of Norse mythology.
In this site about the Nordic cosmology -

http://users.dickinson.edu/~eddyb/mythology/Cosmography1.html

- they are reported the following realms:
first level: Asgard (Aesyr), Vanaheim (Vanir), and Alfheim (Light Elves).
second level: Midgard (Men), Jotunheim (Giants), Nidavellir (Dwarves), and Svartalfheim (Dark Elves)
third level: Hel and Nifelheim (Undead).
It is said that:
Jotunheim the realm of the giants. It lies in the eastern regions of Midgard, with a giant citadel named Utgard.

The only detailed map I found in the Net is one that it is inserted into a site that refers to a Marvel’s version of the world of Asgard.
http://www.blue-area.net/Places/Asgard/Asgard_Map2.jpg

As you can see from the picture, the "Marvel" map of Asgard in addition to the nine realms above, there are also the following other realms, that I have not found or mentioned in the books that I have on Norse mythology or in the above site:
a) main lands
Gundersheim
Nornheim
Skornheim
(where there is the Glowing desert)
Thrynheim
Varinheim

2) other territories and kingdoms
Gymirsgard
Ringsfjord
Kingdom of Rivvak
Kingdom of Harokin
Kingdom of Jolena

Please, someone could tell me if some of these lands and kingdoms are mentioned in Norse mythology, and in this case the people who live there (and if possible the source of the information), or whether it must be assumed that they are an invention of the Marvel authors?
Thrynheim may be the land of other Giants (mountains giants ??), which I found mentioned in one of the books that I have, as Thrymheimr, about the giantess Skadi.
Nornheim, where there it is the Norn Forest, it may be the land where they live the three Norns.
But the others?
Many thanks to those who will be able to help me.
Sincerely,

Sergio

Nornheim, as far as I know, is the home of the Norns, which holds the well of urd and sits and the foot of Yggdrasil... which, should put it in the 3rd level?

I've seen, but even here the others lands and kingdooms mentioned in Marvel map are not reported.

O.K., that's what I thought too.

I guess many of the kingdoms/fiefdoms are located in one of those 9 worlds, see for example:

Quote
It was the great place where the Ases and their wives, Asesses (Norse, Asynjer), dwelt apart, and from which they ruled. A bridge called Bilrast led to it. In the middle of Asgaard was a great castle in which was Odavold, where the gods (Ases) held their reunions. In it were two magnificent halls: Gladsheim, with the throne Hildskjolf, for Odin, and seats for the Ases; and Vingolf, with a throne for Frigg and seats for the Asesses. From this heavenly country the Ases govern the course of the world and of men. Odin reigns there as father and head, who penetrates all, animates all; gives men intelligence and enthusiasm, and breathes into them the desire for combat and war. At his side was his wife Frigg, the all-nourishing earth, who had Fensal as her abode. The other principal dwelling-places of the Ases in Asgaard were Thrudvang, or Thrudheim, where dwelt Thor, the son of Odin and of Frigg, and who was the thunder, the strength, the sanctification of the world, the friend of men, the defender against the evil powers, the protector of agriculture and of family life; Breidablik, where dwelt Balder with his wife Nanna; Noatum, the abode of Njörd; Thrynheim, that of Skad; Alfheim, that of Frey; Himinbjörg, whence Heimdal protected the Ases; Ydal, where Ull was; Gletner, where Forsete lived, the most just of the Ases; Folkvang, with the hall Sessrymner, where Freya lived, the Asess of Love, and Sökkvabekk, the dwelling of Saga. Moreover, there was Lidskjalv, from which Odin saw the whole universe, and where there was Valaskjalv, all covered with silver, and the yet more splendid and sumptuous hall, Valhal. Above Asgaard stretch the more elevated heavens, whose splendour culminates in Gimle, an unapproachable and golden hall, more luminous that the heaven. The site of Asgaard was placed near the Don, which was regarded as the boundary line between Asia and Europe. Hence Snorre derives the name As from Asia, and imagined that the Ases were inhabitants of Asia.

Oh, and on your list Varinheim, it should be Vanaheimr, one of the nine worlds?

Hi, Pocoloco,
many thanks  for your contributions.
Not, in the Marvel map, Varinheim and Vanaheimr are two different lands, the first in the south, the second, the Vanir's land, in the north.

The question for us is to understand if some of the kingdoms or regions listed in the Marvel map have a match in Norse and/or Germanic mythology , or are the result of the imagination of the Marvel Authors.
As I said, in the two books that I have (the Italian verioni of the "Edda of Snorri" - curated by Gianna Chiesa Isnardi and "Gods and Heroes of Mythology Viking" by Brian Braston) in addition to the "nine worlds" also reported on the website that I mentioned above, I found only the land of Thrymheimr (Tryheim the Marvel map) which is inhabited by others Giants.
In a comic book "Raven Banner - the epic of Asgard") by Alan Zelenetz and Charles Vess, published in Italian on 1985, I found the land of Gundersheim cited as "the Kingdom of Trolls".
My problems it is to understand if this land is also mentioned in some original work of Norse/German mythology, to which both the Authors of this comic as those of Marvel could have her way.
Other two kingdoms that interest me are: Varinheim and Skornheim, for which, however, would understand if they come from the Nordic-Germanic mythology or from the imagination of the Marvel Universe.
From the names you would say that they may be the "land of Varin" and the "land of Skorn". But who were the Varin and Skorn?
