I would of though black powder to be the obvious choice, its the easiest rule set to get hold of, and widely used/recognized

I think starting point would be what size of army you fancy that may dictate rules as army or skirmish level etc , scale of minis e.g. 28mm or 15mm

Piquet Basic Rules, plus their Band of Brothers supplement is ideal for the Italian Wars.

It's not for everyone, since it is card driven, along with command points, so you don't have full control over your troops, but again, that's part of what makes it perfect for the Italian Wars, as well as the Wars of the Roses too.

I seem to recall people using it for the Hundred Years Wars as well, also, since it is a pretty flexible system.

You can create your own custom cards to match them with the battles you plan to recreate, as needed.

Maximilian is another good set of rules too.  Rather like Big Battles DBA, but written in clear English, so it is easy to understand.  If I recall correctly, you can use it for the above periods as well.

Impetus sounds ideal for what you want, the 1st supplement is specifically aimed at the Italian Wars, There is also Impetus Baroque (free at the moment) which is ideal for  Pike & Shotee type games.
IMPETUS LINK
Top of page for Forum and Basic Impetus bottom of page for all th expansions.

Basic Impetus is free and is a very basic and stripped down version of Impetus there is also an active forum.

Both Impetus and Piquet give good games.  Italian Wars probably fits Impetus better than Baroque IMHO

Pike and Shotte from Warlord would be much better suited than Black Powder.

Who are you playing against and where?

Might influence things by "what does everyone else use?"

I use Warfare in the Age of Discovery, they're written by the guys who wrote the 7YW set Age of Reason, they're period specific, so should fit in with what you want.

Agreed. We use P&S for ECW and Renaissance games. It's a stand alone rule set and you don't need BP (although they are similar, obviously, in some ways)
"Ho, ho, ho! Well, if it isn't fat stinking billy goat Billy Boy in poison! How art thou, thou globby bottle of cheap, stinking chip oil? Come and get one in the yarbles, if ya have any yarbles, you eunuch jelly thou!"
