Fantasy Gladiators - the Minotaur
« on: 24 October 2013, 03:29:47 AM »
I haven't painted a fantasy miniature in over 20 years, but couldn't resist the urge to put some paint on this Reaper minotaur I have wanted for such a long time.

I require him for testing out some "fantasy" elements of my gladiator game, Blood on the Sands http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51608.0 which will receive some attention after the historical rules are done and dusted.

In keeping with the Roman feel of a gladiatorial combat, I'm after other warriors and monsters that would fit the genre. I'm fairly fussy but, so they couldn't be any old fantasy miniatures - they'd have to have a gladiator feel to them - piecemeal armor, "believable" weaponry etc. Race wouldn't be an issue though.

The monsters would need to fit as well. Mostly humanoid I'd imagine but there is room for some beasts for sure.

Could anyone help collaborate a list here of some possible candidates?

That's a critter I wouldn't want to fight!  Nice work.  :)

I'd throw down my scutum and walk out if that was my draw in the games.  >:(

A decent list there - but any minis or links to go with them?

No links yet, although Foundry used to do most of them.

Also noticed the bronze bull.

Surely a medusa or two wouldn't be amiss?

Giant serpents of fantastical proportions, or even serpent men could work too.

The Bully Boy painted up SPLENDIDLY...that is one VERY INTIMIDATING opponent. VERY WELL DONE!

Surely a medusa or two wouldn't be amiss?

The "turning to stone" factor might play havoc with the spectators...it would make a cool diorama though.

There was an 80's arcade machine that featured an arena and one of the "bosses" was a giant serpent tailed Medusa with a bow (can't recall the name of the game though), but it was an epic fight. The stone gaze thing may prove a problem though, especially when half the stadium become statues!!  lol

As for snakemen, I have a trio of them from an old D&D range of miniatures. I'll try and post a couple of pics of them. They are suitably armed and scantily clad, suiting the genre perfectly.

And that Fenris wolf is a beast alright!! He would fit either as a giant beast in 28mm or a big wolf in 40mm by the sounds - which could suit some of the chaps who are using 40mm gladiators.

Agreed - they are great gamer Mac, especially the carrion crawler, but the medusa I was thinking of is more this:
