Quick question...hero icon?
« on: 21 January 2014, 09:22:21 PM »
So,

Without going into too much detail (read: learning from my mistakes) I'll simply preface this by saying that I'm working on something...

Let's say that some imaginary person is putting together some imaginary dice for use with some imaginary dungeon crawl game.  What would a nice generic icon be for a group of adventuring heroes?  The other faces of the dice consist of mainly shields/swords etc.  The only things I've thought of were a lantern, and my buddy suggested some kind of helmet.  Is there an icon or a logo that screams "heroes" to you guys?  Any suggestions?

Cheers.

î  lol ;D

First thing that comes to mind is a sword. Then indeed maybe a shield, although those two are usually reserved for attack and defence...

A helm would be appropriate, but I also really like the lantern idea.

Other things that might work could be a fist, an eagle (they seem to invoke images of bravery...  ::) ), a torch, a pint of ale (depending on the seriousness of the game obviously), then maybe a chalice or perhaps two gripping hands (like a handshake, to symbolise the cooperation of the group).

But I'm sure there's plenty more...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Treasure chest? Every 'hero' in any game I was involved in was big on robbery-with-violence...

All excellent suggestions...and oddly I have images saved of almost all of those.  lol

The icon would be used for a huge variety of things, so the more versatile the better.  It'll be a small icon on an indented D6 so it needs to be simple enough to pick up at a glance.  I like the treasure chest idea, and the helm...maybe even a crown?  The lantern is calling to me also, because it's such a simple representation of the iconic player group "who has the lantern!?" etc.  ???

Please keep the ideas coming.

I would go for something in black and white

a helm could be this:

This could also fit:  :D

But I would go for this:

While this is all prone to change (it'll be years before this really goes under the knife) right now I'm using full colour symbols.  Unfortunately that makes it a little more difficult.  They have to be simple, but colourful, and identifiable.

It's a bit classical, but what about laurels for your heroes?

How about a sword, wand, mace and dagger radiating from the center of the die toward the edges, representing the archetypal dungeon party?  Otherwise I think the lantern is good.

Citizen, I have that exact Laurel piece of art, and have used it on my Gladiator dice actually...and yes...I did consider it.  lol  The icon has to be really really small, so several weapons won't work (the file art is 188x188 pixels with an image fitting only on the center 115x115 so I have to stick to a single icon, so that you can even see the darn'ed thing!

As it stands now, leaning helmet or lantern...trying to think what old dungeon crawl games might have used.

Helmet is a really, really common icon for hero. I know Mage Knight used it for the Dungeon heroes too.

What about a medallion, or sword and shield together?

Well...I may have just struck the mother load:

http://game-icons.net/

A phenomenal, free source of excellent icons, and perfectly suited for use with dice.  I have some nice colour artwork on the dice designs right now, but I may drop that and go with the much simpler icons from this page...now I just have to whittle it all down.  As much as I'd like to mix the two, I think using all icons from one site would really give it a much more cohesive look, vs. random PNGs from various clips of art.
