Opinions on SOTR vs AE-WWII
« on: 27 July 2008, 01:03:14 AM »
I have just picked up the Secrets Of The Third Reich book and so far it looks pretty good. What are peoples opinions on how it compares to Darkson Designs AE-WWII rule set?

Are miniatures from each range compatible?

Any big differences in how large/small games play out?

Miniature wise, the humans aren't very compatible. AE-WWII humans are much more slender, with more realistic proportions and don't fit too well with most WW2 ranges out there (except maybe Ebob's and some of the figures sculpted by Richard Ansell for Brigade Games and BAM). The non-humans (robots, etc...) are compatible enough though.

Exactly what White Knight said about the minis, they don't really mix that well.

Rules-wise it depends what you like playing:
SOTR is Platoon level with options for tanks ( walkers etc) and is suited for games with 30+ minis a side. You can play smaller games but it is designed for a reasonable number of minis.
AEww2 is a skirmish game with only a few minis a side ( depending upon detachment type 10 minis or so). It is suited for a smaller playing area and has rules for light vehicles only ( at the moment).

Both have their own merits and play really well.
Not much help, but I like both!!!

Can only echo what PM says, I use both depending on what sort of game I wish to play. I have used SOTR with about a dozen figures a side and found that it still worked quite well, although the zombies were recycled a couple of times as the dozen I have painted hardly contistute a horde :)

If finances allow go for both, Darkson have extra rules for larger forces on their website BTW.

Ruleswise they are two very different game. I'd really suggest getting both. They play very differently and have a very different feel. Both enjoyable games though

I mix and match figs from both ranges and even use Pulp Figures and Artizan minis in both games.

TGN has a review of AE-WWII

and I am working on a review of SoTR now.
