I cheat and make my own decals, which is much easier than freehanding in scale for me.

I mostly cheat as well, bung the originals,  print the shields out and  glue to card...works with pavisen and all other types.

Unfortunately at the time I wrote this shield-painting article I wasn't interested in weathered or battle-damaged shields... I've since change my mind about that. However, the below article is still how I start, weather and battle damage come after the pristine shield is painted. I hope it helps a little! It's specific to Hoplite shields, but the techniques can be applied to any genre/period.

Maybe I'll do a weathering tutorial at some point... Seems like a fun project!

It's awesome that you make your own shields from scratch, and do such a good job at that!

I always have a very hard time producing my own shields. My problem was always with symmetry. I used to draw and cut out half of the shield and then trace it, flip it, trace it again, but symmetry was always shoddy. I totally learned from your article that printing and gluing the shape and then using that to cut is obviously the best answer! So obvious after someone shows you
