Wargaming fix when on the move, any suggestions?
« on: 07 July 2014, 11:19:46 PM »
Having recently shifted careers, I've found myself in the last few weeks doing a lot of travelling and overnight stays, so have barely been able to pick up a paintbrush. Aside from here, which is of course my first port of call, does anyone have any suggestions as to podcasts, blogs, sites etc to give me my wargaming fix? Don't have to be period or genre specific or anything like that, just something with broad interest.

Plus, since I have finally acquired an all-singing all-dancing phone, are there any good wargaming-related applications (I refuse to call them "apps"  :D) out there?

Cheers
Rob

I listen to a couple;
The D6 Generation -  US based and sometimes a little irreverent in places, geared primarily towards lightweight boardgames, at around 4 hours every two weeks I tend to store them up during the summer and listen to them when I'm mowing the lawn.
Meeples and Miniatures - UK based. I used to listen to this one, but the poor sound quality put me off.  It may have improved.

Practical, rather than cerebral, I bought one of these to travel:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_524036-56005-1912_0__?productId=50069893

"11-Piece Household Tool Set with Soft Case

The 11-piece hobby kit with fold out mat is perfect for jewelry and model making, repairs, sewing, quilting, school projects, scrapbooking and much more
Includes a non-slip, self-healing cutting mat that is graduated and fully numbered, with guiding gridlines and angle cuts for an ideal cutting surface
Housed in a slim, sturdy and light-weight carrying case
This work center includes a selection of useful tools for home, office for job-site solutions
A tool kit ideal for enthusiasts, hobbyists and technicians
This kit includes a 12-in steel rule, tweezers, 5x magnifier, hobby knife, mini pliers ; long nose/mini diagonal, screwdriver w/bits, cutting mat, and fold-out carry case
Parallel jaws grab the flats of a fastener, reducing the chance of rounding
Durable, hardened-steel laminate construction"

It is now HALF the price I paid for mine, & well worth full retail for convenience.

While it lacks storage/extra tool space, that makes it uncluttered & compact, magazine size.
I wouldn't wanna carry it on an airplane though, they'd have fits!!

I've used mine on the road for figure clean up & sub-assembly prep.

YMMV

Do you own a tablet?

No. Not unless you count the tablets I use for hayfever.

Alot of rulebooks and sourcebooks are now available as PDF's and would be viewable on your fancy phone or computer or you could get a low cost e-reader.  Perhaps now's the time to explore a new ruleset or genre or explore the depths of your favorite genre/era.

Warhammer Quest had a very decently rated app-game for the iPhone/iPad(?) a while ago, not sure if it ever became an Android app or not.
