More 28mm design questions - electricity?
« on: 02 November 2014, 08:08:22 AM »
I got the feeling that certain vsf and steampunk collectors mind electricity as a power source in 1870-1910ish games. Now I am wondering if this really is a trend or if I got that all wrong.

Attached some 'tesla-saber' we were dreaming up. How do you gents feel about it?

I don't mind the odd electric cannon on a walker or armoured suit but anything more is a bit over the top for my personal tastes, especially on troops  :)

cheers

I still have a feeling that it might work with blades, at least in a more fantasy/magical setting. I wouldn't try and use it for infantry guns really.

From a purely practical point, the wires look a bit delicate.

Given that a lot of gamers have hands like a bunch of badly cooked sausages, they may not last through many games.

How about a battery shaped pommel?
Or a pommel with plug pins - so the sword holds just enough charge for a couple of minutes combat and then you plug it back in for a power-up?

I like it, but it can't be too big, illogical in where it is (gravity still works) or clumsy.
That said, an electric sword is an excellent idea in my opinion.

I don't mind it as long as it's done 'right'. Batteries would be huge for example or you'd need cranks for short lived static charges. Nemo's troops used electrical weaponry and equipment in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, so that makes it kosher in my book ;)
So many projects..... so little time.......

Right - I wasn't even pondering with Nemos crew, but that can be indeed considered some sort of pass par tout. Re: size of bits - I think weapons, hands, heads, and generally everything that adds character to the mini is slightly oversized. Might look a little weird with the 3D render, but I am sure it's gonna be alright once casted.

I think I shall give it a go but limit it to a few blades.

Electricity (and gasoline engines) should be rare for VSF and common for Pulp.
