Cuthberth's Lament
« on: February 08, 2015, 09:55:53 PM »
We had an enjoyable time playing a game of Saxons vs. Danes this Saturday.

Without going much into detail I will first present the cast:

Cuthberth - Former leader of a small hamlet and recently eloped from a group of Danes who kept him as good weather charm in the fore of their boat. Being a blabbermouth Cuthberth managed to tell the Danes where he came from, that his sister was good looking and that his local church was full of silver.

Uther - While Cuthberth has been AWOL Uther has been running things in the small hamlet of Coulooeughleh in Northumbria. He's fallen head over heels for Cuthberth's wife Hulda. Knowing that the Danes would come looking for their captive Uther has planned to steal Hulda away during the fight. And if possible slip a knife in the neck of his rival.

Sweyn - The Danish chieftain hell-bent on getting back his good weather charm. Also very eager to find the silver that he'd managed to mention and thought while there, why not look for that handsome sister he bragged about too.

Torbein - Another Dane. This one can barely keep his contempt for Sweyn below the surface and really thinks he ought to be the chief himself. If at any point there would be an opening for anything... then he wouldn't mind!
Other than that Torbein's favourite pastimes is like Sweyns - silver, women and what not.

So everything was peace and quite in Coulooeughleh.

Everyone was wasting time and wondering about things like 'why did the chicken cross the road'. Some claimed that they merely lured by a cock but no one knew for sure.

Suddenly naked men and warriors burst from the woods! The Danes had arrived

The peasants had gathered their shields and spears and were ready to stand and eventually run if the enemy kept on coming.

And apparently it did!

Some of the more trained warriors took up defensive positions.

In a way it was a battle of religions too

Some of the more eager peasants managed to run across the road and start hammering at the Danes heavily encouraged by Cuthberth.

Uther on the other hand hurried to get hold of Hulda and started sneaking away from the battle.

In a fit of modern technology the Danes formed an impervious wall of shields.

Warriors and peasants clashed

Sweyn called Cuthberth from his ranks and soon dealt with him. He was a prisoner yet again.

Naked men ran across the fields and wreaked havoc

Fate was fickle and Cuthberth escaped and took after his captor.

Uther stared from afar and still kept on sneaking away towards the east.

Sweyn and Cuthberth kept on fighting. Sweyn was alone but support by bows.

At last Sweyn was cut down, Uther escaped and Cuthberth and his sister became the captives of Torbein. The church silver was never found.

Mooh

It was a great game. Loads of fun.

I am sure that Erik Sweinson will appear to rewenge the death of his father. And give both Torbein and Cuthberth their comeuppance.

Oh yeah, as an extra gimmick I had added 'rerolls' to the game.

Each player was given a short twig. And for each time he was able to snap it in two with his bare hands he was granted a reroll.

It lead to some very funny situations. At one point when a player really wanted a reroll because Torbein had died from bad rolls of the dice he was suddenly able to break a twig he had otherwise given up on.

In fact one player claimed to still have hurting thumbs two days after the game.

The twig idea is hysterical. I feel like it would give you a lot of false hope.  lol

It did give a lot of false hope! People were desperately trying to break their remaining sticks.

Capital!

Wish I had been able to attend, could have brought the mead for the post-battle feasting  lol

I really like the idea of extending the pines with natural twigs, I may have to steal borrow that; perfect for those northern pine forests.
