The Star Beast
« on: 12 October 2008, 06:45:21 PM »
The cruel, the terrible, the evil, the Most High Beep of the Meeps....

Another diversion into Doctor Who comics I'm afraid... I blame Uti Long Smile personally...

I know I got his ears wrong... took me bloody ages, and these were the third attempt and I was happy enough until I had another look at the comic and thought sod it, it'll do.... I'm no sculptor, but I'm happy with it... aside from the ears, the other difference from the comics is the colour, the original strip was black and white, but in the colourised reprints he has blue fur and purple skin... now I was happy with the sculpted fur, but to paint fur a non-fur colour and expect it to look like fur is asking a bit much for my sculpting efforts so I went with white... I think this fits him better and makes him more cute and fluffy looking in the eyes of humans than blue would... besides I seem to remember reading that Dave Gibbons based him on his cat (hence the tongue sticking out all the time)...

And a quick comparison with the 10th Doctor. Beep needs matting down a bit more I think.... God I miss Dullcote...

Two more comic companions to follow in due course... Shayde and Kroton...

I do not know what this is (well, technically speaking, now I know it´s a critter from an english comic book series), but I love the model!

Somehow reminds me of the extraterrestrian from "Dark Star".

yeah... I've just the general idea for him at the moment, it will probably come together at it's own pace... Shayde is at the start of the build, but stalled a little at the moment, will get back to him though...

EDIT: oh and finish the Star Tigers.... still need a Vol Mercurius

We're all our own worst critics - don't be hard on yourself, it's a great sculpt. And all the more so for putting some life into such an obscure character. Will be great to see what you do with the rest - the Who comics canon is a lot of fun.

But you forgot to mention Frobisher! He's surely got to be at the top of any of the spin-off characters (and rumours he may even appear in the next series of Torchwood). A Copplestone penguin mini bag an easy enough result...

like you say, Frobisher is just a penguin mini from Copplestone... besides at the moment I've only the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 10th Doctors... need to do a sweep at the BTD website at some point.... Shayde and Kroton are technically 5th and 8th Doctor bits...

Aha - fair point. Got to mach up those companions! Frobisher is on my list to sculpt for my 40mm Doctor Who stuff. I love the Sixth Doctor/Peri/Frobisher stories that John Ridgeway drew. Just fizzing with great ideas.
