28mm Unfeasibly/Blackhat Méharistes?
« on: 18 May 2015, 07:58:33 PM »
Any news on the announced Méharistes.?.both Camel Mounted and dismounted..
on the Colonel's Bill shop i read that they are available..
maybe the man behind this line could tell us if they are on the pipeline and which kind of packs poses...i really would prefer some ready made one instead of heavy converting some other generic arab figures..

The 1st pack of Meharistes (FFL09) have been cast & are available from Mike @ BackHat Miniatures and from Colonel Bills at UK shows

Hi-Res photos should be done by the end of next week (29th May) - the Unfeasibly site will be brought up to date over the next few weeks.

Low res photo in the interim

Kind Regards

I plan to do another pack in about 3 months time without the fez showing, similar style of headdress so they blend in.

I'm thinking of using the officer on the far right, maybe do a mounted version....

also those ones are splendid..one of the officer..appear to be wearing a Jellabah over his tunic...a very iconic symbol of the compagnies méharistes ....
so i can keep quite and avoid to do heavy conversions on my arab camelmen and wait also, in the future,  for mounted méharistes troopers?

Please Mark...will this set of artyllerymen, officers be available for casting and selling soon?...so i can order it together with those méharistes
they could be very useful not only for Légionaires but also for Joyeux penal infantry frequently used as engineers multi task expendables troops in many columns in Maroc and far inside desert...the crews could be used to man both mountain and field pieces wich saw a lot of service VS Morocans...with thei shirt-sleeve order i also saw some use in Tonkin, West and Equatorial French African possessions

The plan is to release the 80mm mountain gun and crew in a few weeks time, once the moulds have been made

Early view of the 80mm 'De Bange' mountain gun.

Once the gun is cast, a four mule team will be made and also an extension onto the cannon trail thereby giving the field gun version.

The plan is to offer 5 packs;
pack 1 mountain gun plus crew    [June release]
pack 2 2 x mountain gun (no crew)   [June release]
pack 3 field gun plus crew
pack 4 2 x field gun (no crew)
pack 5 4 x mule team with mountain gun

Kind Regards
Mark

Thanks

I understood the méharistes fought on foot...

If I were to do mounted meharistes would it be best to have them just riding - as on patrol, or to have them shooting whilst mounted ?

Mark..i 've read many accounts of practically every fight/skirmish down to patrol/scout clashes involving méharistes...and they were , invariably, firefights of outnumbered méharistes VS touaregs..in most case from long/mediuum distance..from cover , lying down behind ammo boxes or from dunes...and once tribesmen where soften up ..or in order to prevail from a difficul situation..ending with a charge..like in the moovi "Fort Saganne"...but always on foot obviously..so maybe a need for other kneeling/sheltering/lying figures and kneelig camels
the nice pict of the diorama that you posted refers to a famous illustration of "Le Petit Journal" that i've the pleasure to have an original copy..but it's totally unrealistic as regards the battle stance of the camelmen...also the mounted, actualy riderless, officer is unrealistic...in the great Amada of deep sahara i cannot see a horse enduring the same travel distance, lack of water ecc..of camels
they approached usually their objectives but invariably  dismounted to fight..
In my opinion the camel mounted méhariste..which is the true role as they were experts Chambaa riders and scouts..should be depicted in a cruising pose very simple..relaxed....with rifle under is saddle as in the illustration and brandishing no weapons...maybe with the veil over is face to protect VS sandstorm..alos their officer, except the képi, should be in native Jellhaba attire and sandles..or better barefoot when riding...

So we have a plan....

Another pack of Meharistes on foot, skirmishing with rifles, will do two kneeling, one breaking from cover and one firing whilst moving....

I already have a pack of 4 camels, kneeling - available from Mike @ BlackHat miniatures

Thank you for your help & advice

Kind Regards
Mark

It'll be excellent...méharistes fights were pure skirmishes...in a game recreation of historical accounts i imagine a ratio of 1 to 1 or, a maximum, figure scale of 3 to 1...in their most famous one of the first battle.."Le combat de Tit" 70 of them wiped out a 200 warriors force of charging Touaregs..some camel mounted and brandishing , like the figures from Unfeasibly, straight swords, shileds and javelins...it was their last time that they came in battle without proper firearms
