Quick SCW Query
« on: 22 June 2015, 07:12:42 PM »
Hello, one for the SCW experts.

I'm building up some 20mm forces for the earlier part of the war so I have militia and Asaltos squaring up to Legion and Peninsular Army units with Moors to follow.
With regards to armour, can I use my Panzer 1's and T26 tanks with these or did they arrive after the formation of the Popular Army?
Reading Frank Thomas, his Legion unit seems to be facing militia and IB, mentioning being attacked by Russian tanks with 'quick fire Pom-poms' that I take to be T26's armed with 45mm guns, there is also mention of a twin turreted tank armed with machine gun, a T26A maybe?

The first tanks for both sides began appearing from around October '36. I've never heard of, or seen any reference to the twin-turreted T-26 being supplied (barring Frank Thomas) and I believe shipments of vehicles are both pretty well recorded in surviving documentation (it is known exactly how many, what types, when and even the ship names they travelled on) for both sides.

There was one 'myth' that a solitary Vickers twin-turreted 6-tonner was supplied to the Republic by Paraguay (or Bolivia, I forget), so that might be what is being referred to... but it was a myth apparently.

The first Republican units in action, 15 or so T-26 (one source includes 5 Spanish Renault FTs in that total... which may be correct), which also included a group of 6 BA-3 armoured cars, did so on 27th October 1936 outside of Madrid. First 'tank' on 'tankette' encounter was by the same group in the assault on Sesena on 29th October, where the Republicans encountered a single platoon of CV33/35 tankettes of the Nationalist '1st Tank Company'.

This Wikipedia article is pretty much correct for the Nationalists:

If I recall correctly and barring the example above, tank on tank encounters were unusual to say the least until Mid-37 onwards.
