Shotgun Query

Just a quick one. In the rule book it says:

When firing a shotgun at short range, you hit all models within a 6" long by 2" wide area. Every model touched must roll for damage.

Does this mean there is no to-hit roll at all? Do you simply go straight to damage rolls for everyone under the template (which is how it reads to me, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant), or do you have to roll to successfully place the template? If there is no to-hit roll then what is the +2 in the Short Range column for in the shotgun stats? I'm a little bit confused by the wording as to the intent with this rule.

It's funny, we had a shotgun in our previous game, but I've totally forgotten what we did.

Surely there must be a to-hit roll to? A shotgun can't be THAT much of a super weapon.

Perhaps, but the damage roll leaves a 50% chance of each target being unharmed in the case of rank and file, and an even better survival chance with leaders and heroes. So it is not given that everyone will be automatically mown down.

You have to make a To Hit roll but only once. All models under the template are effected.
I think the shotgun is more a character weapon. You can do nasty things with it if you get into the flank of a firing line for example.

We did it wrong. We placed the template and then rolled to hit each chap under it. Didn't make any difference to the game, though. The hero still made a mess of those Masai.

I'm getting up to speed on rules for a 'con game I am running next month, so going to be asking some q's.

Regarding shotguns, I understand all the above, but what happens between range >6" and <=10"?

No template used (I assume), but then what mechanics to use?
