New in the city of Frostgrave
« on: 20 November 2015, 01:30:29 PM »
I discovered Frostgrave on the 3rd of november, right after all the 'nickstarter' pre-order deals were closed  :(

Luckily I went to 'Crisis' in Antwerp a week later and bought the rules book, the Necromancer/Apprentice, the Stone Construct/flesh Golem, a box of Frostgrave soldiers, the undead encounters, treasure tokens and the shiny, glitter gold and gems set.  Some d20 dice and a frost/snow mat 3' by 3' completed my purchases.

At the moment my 10-man Warband is ready to be undercoated (this weekend) and painted.

My quest for scenery is ongoing and am waiting for my 'Thaw of the Lich Lord' book to arrive (ordered from Osprey)

I really like the campaign section (also liked Mordheim in the old days) but think wizards seem to level up to fast (2-3 levels per game it seems).

I only wish there were some solo rules or a solo scenario(s) were your warband was pitted against a host of creatures instead of the normal warband vs warband fights (Frostgrave must be swarming with warbands because you encounter 1 each time you venture out  :) )

Glad to be here and hope I will be enjoying Frostgrave for a long time to come.

I also am new to Frostgrave - I have the book, interested players, and a whole lot of ruins to paint.

I see no reason you can't have a solo scenario with stuff out of the bestiary - use the animals rules for how they move.
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Hi Eberk, welcome among us. You really started big! I must say that due to Frostgrave I now play much more often then in the past. The game is quick, simple and funny.

Welcome.
Its a grand game. Plenty of scope to do what you like with background, scenarios and whatever.
Have a trawl through the threads and I'm sure you will find some thoughts of solo-ing in Frostgrave.
The combat can be brutal and don't be put off if you have a bad run of luck, its character building!
2-3 levels per game is about usual but I don't think its too much. There are still decisions to be made, with stats to increase, spells to learn and known spells to improve, I always seem to want 1 more level than I've got.

Enjoy

Thanks guys,

@Jiron
yeah, I started big.  That does tend to happen when visiting a convention with a lot of money in your pocket  ;)  So much to see, so much to buy...

@JohnDSD2
no worries, this is not my first wargame so I won't be put off after losing a battle.  In fact I would rather lose a close-fought battle than win a walk-over battle.

In the meantime my 10-man warband, together with a stone construct, 4 ghouls and the treasure tokens, are base-coated, ready to be painted.

Don't wait for your terrain!

http://www.wargamevault.com/product/154745/Heroic-Maps--Geomorphs-Winter-Wilderness-Ruins is a great beginning...2d boards still look quite nice!

As others have mentioned, you can use the monsters' "AI" in order to run a solo game.  You could even tweak the game into a dungeon crawler if you have floor tiles.  Take, say, a level 0 Apprentice, Barbarian, Knight, and Ranger; allow the soldiers to level, take different gear, and have more item slots to balance them out.  As you enter different rooms, consult the encounter table (or make encounter cards) to determine what you face.  Perhaps have a boss monster for the last tile.  Collect treasure as normal.

Castle Ravenloft (the boardgame) is like this, since nobody controls the monsters, and each monster has its own "AI."

As you went to Crisis, does this mean you are from the Antwerp area?

@Philhelm : Castle Ravenloft...  Good tip, I will look into that.   Monster AI is cool for solo play.

@ElOrso : indeed, somewhat south of Antwerp  ("ssst...  hier rijpt den D....")

@Kealios : 2d boards will be my last resort when I can't find/build/buy any 3d terrain.   But thanks for the link
