What sculpts did Alan Marsh do for Bicorne Ecw?
« on: October 28, 2015, 05:22:40 PM »
I have just received an order from Bicorne miniatures from their Ecw range that I bought to bolster my Renegade Ecw... But the miniatures in the pack I ordered are much smaller than their Renegade counterparts- more in the range of Warlord and TAGs Tyw/Ecw ranges.

I thought Bicornes stuff was sized more towards Renegades stuff, or have I purchased an Alan Marsh pack that Captain Blood has mentioned are smaller than the Nick Collier sculpts?

Does anyone know what packs Marsh did?

Ooooh. Now you're asking...

Alan Marsh did most of the later additions, including some of the gun crews and the last few cavalry packs. Nick Collier did the first 80% of the range (also including some gun crews, which is confusing)

Stylistically, Collier's figures for Renegade and Bicorne are virtually identical. But some of the rank and file Bicorne infantry are definitely slighter than the Renegade equivalents which are right up there at the big and chunky end of 28mm.

The cavalry and character / command figures are all round about the same size, Bicorne and Renegade.

The Alan Marsh figures for Bicorne are stylistically totally different - much squatter and with big hands and feet. Still characterful, but nowhere near as evocative of the period IMHO.

For instance, in this picture...

The figures on the left and right are by Marsh. As you can see, they have a very definite 'munchkin' look, compared to the Collier figure in the middle. Figures number 2 and 4, I think are also by Marsh, but perhaps a bit more 'in the style of' the rest of the range.

The Collier sculpted gunners below have a very different look. His posing is much less stiff, more natural and more dynamic.

Collier also sculpted a third ECW/TYW range for TAG, which again are stylistically very similar, but definitely 10% more diminutive.

Thank you for the swift reply Captain. So my 'musketeers loading from bandolier' pack is a Collier pack then... So it seems Renegade while stylistically identical are bigger and accounting for the Renegade ranges scale creep, sometimes MUCH bigger than the Bicorne stuff Collier did.

This is my first taste on the bicorne range and I have to say, they are a little less 'rough' hewn than the renegade equivalent.

On the subject of Colliers TAG range of Tyw, I found on comparison with my bicorne stuff they were an almost identical size with only slight differences in the style and the bicorne muskets are a bit chunkier. It was a more recent Tag sculpt and I believe they have got a touch bigger than some of the earlier ones (not massively so though).

One last question if I may, which came first, the Bicorne or renegade ecw ranges?
