Flags?
« on: 28 November 2015, 10:34:45 PM »
My google fu has failed me in relation to Victorian era standards (or standards in general for that matter).  Is there a consensus of opinion regarding where the bottom of the flag should be, when unfurled and blowing gently in the wind, in relation to the standard bearers head when the butt of the flag staff is resting on the ground?  I know that generally the tallest subalterns were chose to carry the colours and also that the flagstaffs where a regulation length and even that the size of flags changed between the 1700s through the 1800s, but in general wargaming terms what are peoples preferences?  Above the head, somewhere between the top and bottom of the head?

I'm not sure if there's a consensus, but given the size of flag I had and the length of the standard, I put mine at around chin-height in the first photo here: http://redorcsblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/shameless-photography-in-lieu-of-real_14.html

Of course this in an a-historical regiment, because the Royal North Surreys never existed, and anyway, these are purporting to be around 1891 and ensigns were abandonned in the 1870s I believe.

Thanks Red Orc,
My thoughts are similar, I think it looks OK at head height.
Here's a pic of the 63rd Regt at Niagara around 1861-63.  The flag staff appears about twice the height of the ensign, so if the flag is 6 feet then touching the head would be about right.
