Son of the Winter War thread
« on: December 27, 2015, 11:11:20 PM »
I have some new pics for the aeons old project (20mm Ivan for Winter War), but that was a couple of image servers ago, and I have lost many of the pics there. No doubt I can dig up some of the stuff, but I thought I'd make a new start, if that is alright? The old text might be relevant for the information/text it contains, but it seems all the pics are no show, and it would be a big job to find out any of the missing pics and then link them again, maybe not worth it?

Anyways, here are some new pics of recent daubing.

I had some trouble with the matte varnish I used on these Finns, it was far too glossy, and when it dried, it seemed to 'leak' away some of the highlights and washes, making the minis look pretty grimy and monotonous. Might be the way the varnish reflect light differently, or that the inks I used might have been affected? Dunno. I might touch up the minis a little, especially the whites.

A mixed bag of Russians dug in. The Tumbling Dice support weapons were a bit odd, the Maxim didn't have the gun shield, and the carriage was huge. Likewise the mortar had a oblong rectangular base which I haven't seen anywhere, might be a pre-war model or something. Luckily they don't show much in the snow. I thought about cutting the bayonets off because they're dug in, but then I thought why do it. There are already couple riflemen with no bayonets (and the SHQ ones are so thin they keep snapping off . which is a pity, since the rifles look pretty good.) Mixed in some SHQ Russians with summer kit to make a whole squad.

On second thought, it wasnt a good idea to take the shots against white background. Combined with the rather harsh lights I had, the pics look too bright, contrasted, and washed out. You can hardly see the green of the Soviet helmets on my computer? maybe use a different background next time?

Nice set of pictures, the snow looks great and very real, looks awfully cold.
