Doing Winter
« on: 11 May 2012, 11:52:56 PM »
The other weekend I bought my brother the SOTR rules for his Birthday.
I also bought myself a US starter box. During the week I ordered some armoured support.

First painted figure

We are going to do winter games. So I need help on how to do winter bases?
I was thinking of going cheap and cheerful and just using some poly filler. Has anybody any experience of this or of a better way?

It'll be bicarbinate of soda I expect.

The two best methods I've seen are

a) to use ground glass with water effect, which can be got from a few companies in snow basing kits. You don't get a lot but it goes a long way. Here's a review of one brand.
http://tutofig.com/2012/05/review-test-secret-weapon-winter-kit-corps-bases/

b) filler powder, the stuff used to bulk out resin castings. This is an incredibly fine powder that almost flows like a liquid, I once dropped a figure in a bag and it just dissapeared to the bottom. Mixed with pva, this stuff gives a fantastic heavy snow look.

Easiest way is bicarb and pva though.
So many projects..... so little time.......

bicarbonate i think (baking soda)

As a note, baking powder (not soda) and bicarb aren't the same thing (in the UK anyway).

Lovely painting Colin, it's good to see that it didn't take you long to get started on the boxset.

Also why am I not surprised that you also bought a mech! I take it your brother hasn't yet. What are the rules like? Fast and fun? Is there much scope for a 3 way game within the rules? And what scale is the combat- skirmish or all out war?

Great video, also I love the accent!

Cheers
Andy

I think it is one of the ingredients, yes, but there is also starch etc which gets really lumpy and difficult to mix with PVA. Baking Soda is just Bicarb and is fine but it's less common over here than Baking Powder which has the other stuff added to increase shelf life and make it easier to measure and mix in cooking.

Greetings

what I use is "Natron" (Sodium carbonate). I suppose this is the baking soda available in every supermarket. Note I wrote Baking Soda. Not baking powder. That is some other stuff. The soda is some very fine "powder", like sand really. You mix it with a white glue/water mix to the consistency you need. When drying the mix will become more grainy, which is okay.

I would advise you to tint your carbonate/whiteglue/water mix with a drop of blue color. Not too much, a drop is sufficient. Snow (and ice) is not "only white". With a slight blue hue to your snow the bases will look spectacular. More so if, after plastering the base with the slightly  colored mix, you sprinkle lightly some carb over the still wet mix.

Hope that helps
Jo
