Help with FRW flags
« on: May 06, 2016, 01:08:21 PM »
OK guys sorry to bother you all but I need some help, I recently made a French Emigre unit in British service (the Loyal Emigrant Regiment) for the French revolutionary war using Perry's AWI Brits (yea I know probably not the best match for uniforms), but I can't find anything about the flags they carried, I have the wonderful book by Histoire Collections on French flags 1786-1816, but that doesn't cover units in the service of other nations.

So I was wondering if anyone could help or point me in the right direction.

The basic form is shown  here, but unfortunately the central crest is not clearly visible:

Sources concur on the regiment having yellow facings so in accordance with British practice of the era the banner field is most likely to be yellow:

I am pretty sure there is an Osprey book on the Emigre Regiments which might give more information.

@Robh

Thanks that is a help, I've got the Osprey book and it doesn't mention flags.

looking at that picture it almost looks like the crest is an L, so the crest could be LE for Loyal Emigrant. then again I could be wildly wrong.

I've done one flag (very crudely) as the French royal flag white with a grey cross out line, so the second standard I'll attempt to copy the one you've so kindly provided.

Once again Thanks.

Searching for "regiment d'infanterie loyal emigrant" ended up on a guy's Pinterest uniform board with:

Nice colouring in!

"LE" seems appropriate.  A second flag could probably be the Bourbon Royal standard, so plain white with lots of small gold Fleur de Lys. That is shown in the Quiberon landing painting here:

I don't know where their source comes from (probably the same):

this one shows a "white" royalist flag (Regiment Colonel General used in the royalist army of Condé)

Thanks guys this has been a tremendous help. Now I have the hard task of making the flags.

The moral is I should have researched it before painting 24 of the figures.  :?

If you want i could easily do that flag for you mate. Up to you of course.

It looks like the text is Fac Et Spera (Do and hope). If anyone can translate French this could be helpful to some.

So how much would it cost for both flags, the French royal colours and the British regimental colours. Please pm me with a quote if you are willing to do it and thanks in advance for the offer.

It's a book from 1826 (after the French Monarchy was restablished) about the genealogies and coats of arms of the most important noble families of France. The part about Claude-Louis de la Chastre says he had been commander of the Loyal-Emigrant and was given the right to add to his arms a lion holding the flag of this unit. However it doesn't describes the flag, it only says "...the flag of the regiment Loyal-Emigrant, where are written these words: L. E. Fac et spera" .

A bit off topic, but for inspiration while painting. :D

"The soldiers are clothed in red; the priests are clothed in black; the best soldier in the army was private Ar Fur..."

It was written in the 20th century in traditional Breton style. Gweltaz Ar Fur, who sang it since the 1970s, says it was written by his father because someone of their family was involved in these events; he doesn't know more, it could be about someone of the Breton company of Loyal-Emigrant...
