Early Crusaders vs Seljuk Turks
« on: July 03, 2016, 11:42:49 AM »
this was a four way tutorial game (although a couple of the guys had played before) for Sword and Spear

The crusaders at the far end had get to the other end and relieve the town. The crusaders in the town would sally out if the Turks got to within bow range. The Turks had to stop the two joining up, simples!

The Turkish forces had Allied Arabs

The Crusader Relieving force

The Crusaders in the town

Game set up.

Turn 1- All units moves towards their objectives. The town held its positions.

The Templars crash into an Arab Cavalry unit and cause 3 casualties forcing the Arabs to rout

Turn 2- The Arab cavalry attack the Relief column's knights (sorry bit blurred)

The Templar Sergeants in the van of the column, along with some knights and crossbowmen, head off the Turks on their left. The crossbows cause 1 hit on the Turk Light horse.

The Hospilitars and knights charge out from the town

The Turks take the opportunity and charge them, causing 2 casualties on the Hospilitars and receiving 2 hits from the kniights

State of play at end of turn 2

Turn 3
Turks lose one unit from continued melee with the knights from the town

The Arabs faired a lot worse, losing 4 units this turn

The Arabs then lost their commander and that force routed. The Turks were now outnumbered 2 to 1 and decided to melt into the desert.

Although only lasting 2 turns, it got the players into action quickly and they then got the gist of the rules

If it isn't enjoyable, it isn't gaming!

Nice looking game with lots of well painted figures. It's what it's all about!  :)

Not all that early with Templars involved.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

You game looks great, nice al around.

How do you find Sword and Spear? We have played a few games and feel the dice pull/roll leaves to many units milling around. We like the idea of the dice and have talked about some house rules-add a die for each commander, not remove die for routed skirmishers, but not found the magic bullet (arrow) yet.

Do you modify the game in any way?

S&S are now our preferred set of A & M rules. No mods to rules. We have also played 6 players 2 colours of dice and also also with 6 different colour dice, all seem to work.

have played 1000 points a side in an afternoon. very touch and go
