GRAND SCALE 10MM Grand Scale 10mm Crusaders ...
« on: March 25, 2025, 02:27:00 PM »
I'm cogitating on doing an Old Glory One Hour Wargame project, with these figures. First time in this scale, are these the best figures to go with, or are there better ones?

Harry, I've just seen here on LAF that Baccus have taken over the Magister Militum 10mm range. They do Medieval/Crusades. Also worth looking at Pendraken. I don't have any of their Medievals but I like all the other periods I have of their models.

Harry, I haven't seen the Old Glory 10mm Crusader range. I'm not sure if they are in strips or individual castings. I find the strips to be very easy to paint. The figures aren't always the most crisp and detailed but I think they lend themselves to speed painting and give good results.

Pendraken have a nice offering and they also own the TB line of 10mm Crusader-era figures. And as others have mentioned, Baccus has acquired the old Magister Militum 10mm range (now under the Tenth Legion banner) and they had a substantial amount of appropriate figures. They may not all be available just yet as they clean up molds.

Finally there is the Kallistra 12mm range that I believe has Crusaders and such.

I think I have some size comparisons somewhere on my site. I will try to find them and post here.

One things confusing this simple soul, though. The Old Glory figures are advertised without spears, there's a code to order wire ones, but I don't know how to work it!

That is correct, the mounted knights don't have spears attached. OG have a small dimple near the hand of the sculpt and if you use a small drill bit, it is very easy to drill out the hole. I find the bit to naturally slide into the dimple and it's just a small amount of force to pop it through the metal of the hand. I take the wire and dab it into crazy glue and slide it into the hole.

Those Normans in the link are mine (although I imagine they could do double duty as early crusaders), I used the Old Glory spears (cut down a bit) for the knights' lances. Surprisingly easy process if you have a small enough drill bit.

The TB Line figures are probably the nicest ones available in 10/12mm - but all the detail can take some effort to paint.  And they are fairly large, especially the cavalry.

MM cavalry is pretty small. And whilst I haven't got Old Glory from this era, the few I have are on the small side.

So likely Kallistra is a good match size wise with TB Line cavalry.

I reached out to Old Glory and they confirmed the formed infantry in the crusader range are in strips.

The TB Line and Pendraken EMM and ELM as well as AB figures work very well with each other - which offers up just over 100 stock codes (not counting flagsheets) for 10mm Medieval. Magister Millitum are only slightly less in heft and size of the Pendraken range (imo), so every MM figure I have seen mixed in nicely, should you want something from them. Kallistra are really too big to consider and will definitely look out of place.

To address another comment: I actually don't consider Pendraken to be "large", they are a touch heftier than other productions, but that kinda helps to make them more durable, and they are otherwise pretty true to the 1/150 stated scale, IMO.

"The TB Line figures are probably the nicest ones available in 10/12mm - but all the detail can take some effort to paint." <-- I completely concur with this comment, though I don't find the detail an issue personally, I can see where some might wince at separate shields.

As for mixing Old Glory and Pendraken, their individual figures may be ok for you (not so much for me), however the strip figures definitely won't mix well IMO.

Just my .02 and I see Pendraken figs every day.

Disclosure: I am the distributor for Pendraken in the US.
