Best System to Play Judge Dredd RPG? Traveller is Amazing!
« on: 28 January 2017, 12:31:35 AM »
So I've been tempted with breaking back into Mega City-One before but I usually get side tracked or confused by which system to use.

I played the GW system in my youth and while I loved the game (probably more than anything I've played since) yet I think it really was down to the setting. I'm an unapologetic fan of 2001ad especially Joe Dredd.

The GW system is fine but I'd really like to try something a little grittier with exciting combat and an initiative activation a little less clunky than the GW version.

I aware of at least two further conceptions of a JD RPG since… both by Mongoose: d20 version and a module for the Traveler system.

I've read pretty nasty things about the d20 one so I'm more interested in the Traveler. What I've discovered in my google investigations is that the Traveler system is excellent in its own right but what it really excels at is creating characters while its combat isn't as dynamic as some one like it. This would be a turn off for me.

Apart from combat my earlier games/scenarios of JD did have a certain 'Call of Cthulhu' feel to them. With an obvious restriction to character development and freedom of career that the Judges are faced with (in most cases at least ;) ) I felt the games required a little more detective/suspense feel to them. The setting IMO is perfect for this with lots of room for humour and adventure.

I've ordered quite a lot of minis so I'm committed to the project at last but I'd really like to settle on a system before ordering anything.

I'm not familiar while the sci-fi genre at all so I'd really appreciate any help. I also remember Weasel (Ivan) mentioning developing something that might suit the theme.

Thanks for your time and please let me know any suggestions ((or thoughts) if feel might work.

EDIT: I'm not sure which Section this best belongs so please move me if I shouldn't be here  ;)

Judge Dress commonly goes on Future Wars. I'll lock the other thread since crossposting doesn't work so well here and is covered by the forum rules.

I took part in an rpg campaign using the Traveller supplement and it was very good fun.  We played online over Roll 20 and the GM managed to fashion an elaborate story involving spaceship graveyards,  runaway monorail s,  sky surfers,  plenty of hacking and even a trip off planet.  It all worked very smoothly,  it's a great system.

Just bought the Traveller Core Rules and Wow! Makes me want to start a Traveller Campaign...maybe the crew mixed with Judges...Man the possibilities :)

For anyone who hasn't looked at them the character creation is 'out of this world' Sorry  ;)

Listen to a H beam Piper on youtube audio books and see the much better and purer Millar free version of a galactic empire.

Thanks for the Link Scurv. As I mentioned I've no previous knowledge of this system or its lore but man am I impressed with how it inspires the creative juices  :)  The more I read the more interested I'm becoming in  getting a group together to try this out on it's own merits.

I'll check out that youtube link when I get tired of reading  o_o. Cheers

System is very good indeed.

Haven't played Dread myself, but it works very well as system for any kind of RPG really.

Almost holy grail of simplicity and deepness.
It has it flaws -  don't support experience to well, character are best in their late 30 ties and such, but It is very playable.
