Movement over snow
« on: 08 May 2009, 06:54:29 PM »
Can anyone suggest how I can fit movement over snow into the T&T rules? I'm looking for suggestions for rules for movement over snow (both soft/deep and hard/ice) for the following:

Infantry
Cavalry
Wheeled vehicles
Tanks/half-track vehicles
Infantry on skis  :o

Basically I'd say look at the way snow normally affects our movement in real life. I hope you're not of the "I've never been outside"-guys who only know snow from hearsay...?  ;)

Anyway, I would probably treat deep snow as difficult terrain for all infantry and cavallery types. Only tracked vehicles should have a reasonable chance to move normal.

Another possibility would be to generally reduce movement on foot by an inch or so in normal snow, making it considerably harder for deeper snow. Remember to see if it works with your table. Nothing is worse than moving round after round without any action. Or write a scenario with clear objectives and see if it works out with reduced speed.

Very good question.

What about no fast moves in heavy snow for infantry.
Cavalry no two fast moves in a row
And wheeled drivers must make a succesful scorecheck on activation to keep vehicles going.
Tanks no penalty. But scorecheck on difficult terrain or else stuck

Infantry on skis is a great idea.

Thank you

Good Ideas Guys
I think troops on snow shoe/   skis should not get the penalty.

Having noved about in snow shoes I have to say that it is not something I'd think of as prancing lightly. Snow shoes makes movement possible over terain which would otherwise be impossible.

I have rarely experienced snow like that in the areas I roam frequently in Sweden. We get fairly thin layers alt. packed snow alt. a solid crust. My experience with snow shoes is from the Scandian alps, Canada and northern Minnesota where King Bore can dump 2 metres of powder on your head overnight.

I hesitated before replying to this tread not because I’m not familiar with snow but because I’m not familiar with T&T rules...

I think I would use the following general rules;

Soft, deep snow
Infantry = difficult terrain
Cavalry = difficult terrain or even impassable in some case
Wheeled vehicles = impassable
Tanks/half-track vehicles = normal
Infantry on skis = normal

Hard snow, ice
Infantry = normal
Cavalry = normal (or difficult terrain if on ice?)
Wheeled vehicles = normal if on hard snow and difficult terrain with possibility of bugging down, slip off the road if on ice
Tanks/half-track vehicles = normal if on hard snow and difficult terrain with possibility of bugging down, slip off the road if on ice
Infantry on skis = normal (If trained infantry I would probably say that they even can have a bonus movement as people trained for skiing are much faster on "hard" snow than average people walking on foot even when there’s no snow)

Hope that help…  :?
