A new year's resolution, I guess.
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:05:19 PM »
Here's another year started, and a new concept i finally drew down to paper for something I've been wanting to do for too long.

In 28mm, this is going to be a beast, and using my usual form-concrete approach it's going to take a while, resulting in a single solid piece of plaster. Something good for a free weekend, which is something i might have in three months or so. :)

Well, that's it for now: meant to be at the edge of the table, to extend the gaming area vertically without the need to remove roofs and intermediate floors.
C&C are really welcome, especially in this very preliminary phase!

Cheers
Jack

Cool idea, adding vertical height is always good.

I'd have a think if you can make it modular, then it will have more vesitility in games.

Great idea!

+1 for some modularity - maybe break up the two buildings such that they don't have to touch (if say the GM wants to imply a laneway between the two), but can still fit together as one if desired? Might make casting easier!

Also, I can see those stairs being trouble if you try to do this as a single piece... I assume you didn't mean a single cast literally and that there would be a few bits and bobs such as the stairs which would have to be done separately?

Very nice. You didn't want to do the garage door opening into another room?
This is going to be a great one to follow :)

Thank you everyone!

I agree this might work nice as a modular piece, but being a single piece for myself (so, no casting nor shipping) having the two together allow a "passageway" door between the two. I agree i might want to split them up though, i'll have a think about it!

Also, I can see those stairs being trouble if you try to do this as a single piece... I assume you didn't mean a single cast literally and that there would be a few bits and bobs such as the stairs which would have to be done separately?

The idea is to form-cast the whole building in plaster, and that allows any complex shape to be done (since it's a 1-off cast). It's true however that painting might be more difficult this way, i might consider having it done it 2-3 parts!

Very nice. You didn't want to do the garage door opening into another room?

I wanted, initially! But i also like the idea of having a limited number of floors-walkable areas, as the models don't actually *need* to have all the floors to move through. In fact, i might even hide the ground floor of the other building. But an entrance door might be nice.

Aw, so many choices! >___<

A few years back I made a winter post-apoc table like that Jack, set up as a road with the buildings either side, some much taller than others. It was a lot of fun to make and to play. The approach really suits ‘gang’ games with sectoral play. Looking forward to seeing your results.

Great concept!

I know it wouldn’t work for this particular design but it would be nice to cut it vertically in the middle and hinge it so it could also be closed up clamshell style as a standalone building. Would that work?

it sure could work, but it would require a FAR higher degree of accuracy: it's fairly easy to make volumes that appear sharp and orthogonal, but when you must align two differents parts together... that's the moment where any imperfection would arise.

Besides, gaming wise it might be a bit cumbersome, opening it during the game to play inside!

No link at the mo and I can’t get to my stash of images right now, but I’ve got a couple of street views.

It doesn’t show in these images (as it’s not meant to!  ;)) but every level of every building is accessible from the side of the table. These buildings were made from foam core clad with vac formed panels. I really like how you do your concrete structures and so look forward to following your progress.  :D
