Medieval History to Tabletop Game Process x2
« on: 18 December 2024, 04:02:29 AM »
So I've been spending some time fiddling around with old rules, and as part of that I have also been spending time in medieval Wales, a place I just sort of ended up in around 20 years ago or more when still a player of Terry Gore's "Medieval Warfare" rules.

I have documented two outings starting with source material [especially Paul M. Remfry's work] and taking it all the way to the playtesting of scenarios to the actual scenario play.

Orewin Bridge AD 1282 Last hurrah of a Welsh Kingship

Hereford AD 1055 - early scrap with English / Normans

To execute the games, I used some well-known resources like "One-Hour Wargames", and a streamlined version of "Chainmail, 3e" [which I downloaded free on a lark, and have now become a fan of my version!].

I look forward to more outings in Wales, likely with other rule sets like Midgard [I had the pleasure of diving deep into "Mead Price" from Slingshot a few issues back].

I hope that seeing my process to take a game from history to table provokes some fresh ideas and suggestions!

Meanwhile, I hope holiday preparations are going well for you.  Remember the reason for the season...  ;)

"The U.S. Army's mission is to fight and win the nation's wars,
and its vision is to be a global force that fights at the scale required."

Sir, I respectfully suggest 1/56 & 1/100 as the best scales in which to fight...!

Those are really interesting! I’ve not seen that book before, will probably check it out in the future.

Hey James, he has at least two of interest on medieval warfare - as both are Vol 1, I assume there is or will be Vol 2 of each coming.
I paid full price and shipping to the USA, and have zero regrets, they are just what I wanted to create scenarios with.
And... my copy of Midgard should arrive around Christmas!
Best, Alex
