All Dwarf armies
« on: 11 September 2009, 10:01:27 PM »
I have a ton of dwarf figures  :o  and have decided to play a few fantasy games with them with few other races (I have a small contingent of "wood" elves (1970's,) a small army of gnomes (1970's) plus a very small pair of units unit of humans on Lizards/Dinos) but don't want cookie cutter armies.   lol

I have about 80 (not counting siege weapons/artillery or "cavalry" stands) 60 mm x 60 mm stands of figures.   ::)  Yeah, geekiness on steroids I suspect.   8)

I was thinking:

1)  Gunpowder (muskets and artillery)/Steam powered artillery using dwarf army.

2)  Traditional Axe/Spear/Sword/Crossbow equipped Dwarf army.

3)  Non-Gunpowder artillery, Pikes, and bow armed light troops Dwarf Army.

Non-traditional ideas such as a woods dwelling dwarf army or a magic using dwarf army doesn't upset my sensibilities so I invite people to contribute alternative army ideas for different flavored dwarf armies.

Looking forward for something fun/different to consider for the fourth army.

Gracias,

Glenn

I think Finnish mythology has at least one 'water-dwarf', and there may be a whole race of them. That may be something to think about. Either an aquatic race, like Mer-dwarves, or maybe a steampunky, submarine-weilding force of Dwarf Pirates?

Japanses mythology has a kind of gobliny thing called a bakemono, I believe; orange skinned and unpleasant, they might (they're short and violent) be dwarves rather than goblins. I think they lived underground, like Norse dwarves.

Joan Aitkin wrote a book where dwarves living in a cave in Wales were not, as first thought, "Fair Nixies" but "Phoeniceis". So, Middle Eastern dwarves, who had pit camels instead of pit ponies. Or, perhaps a dwarf army of 'the Fair Folk' of English myth (blue and green, Fairy Queens and all that).

How about nomadic dwarves? Either steppe-nomads, or a Mormon/Oregon Trail kinda settup, with wagons and cavalry? Could be fighting the dino-riding humans perhaps...

Perhaps some of these will suggest something. Perhaps not. I offer them anyway.

Also Iceland has 'Elves' that live in the woods, but by thier description they are Dwarfish/gnomish....They are common pranksters.  Luring people into semi dangerous traps just to get some giggles out of it.  So kinda like a court jester type theme.

By the way I love Dwarfs, so when ya can pics are appreciate...now back to painting my dwarfs.

Steampunk dwarfs get my vote.

Undead dwarves are not seen that often, but could be really cool.

i keep meaning to do a small warband of "circus Dwarves" for mordheim but its getting round to do the conversions, its an idea though.

another second on the Dwarf pirate theme (7 seas, 7 famous dwarves. Coincidence? lol)

Dwarf superhero's could be quite fun to do too.

Ages ago I toyed with the idea of an Egyptian themed dwarf army. Ceremonial burial, the construction of intricate and deadly traps to defend tombs, great feats of construction- all common trends between dwarfs and Egyptians (well, at least their pulp counterparts  ;) )

Dwarfs in elaborate Egyptian head-dresses, fortified pyramids, war chariots, and dwarf priests bringing to life armies of ancestor-mummies to defend their cities. I always thought it would be pretty cool.
