Help with Fauconberg Commercial
« on: January 29, 2022, 11:08:49 AM »
Hi, thought I'd ask if anyone had any thoughts on the standard for William Nevill Lord Fauconberg. I drew this standard a while back but am not convinced of it's accuracy. I have the excellent McGill  and Jones book from Freezywater which contains a conjectural representation of the flag in white over blue a red lion central device and patterned with fishhooks. There is also a suggestion that the central device could of been a bulls head sable.

The information I have suggests the following:

Fish-hook as his badge/device - plenty of evidence for this
Two annulets interlaced as a  possible badge/device  - they are pictured on his seal.
Possibly three fish hooks fretted azure  - Fenn book of badges however not attributed to Fauconberg
Family Crest is a white Bull's head with green horns - Westmorland and seen on his garter plate
Fauconberg is represented by a Blue lion on a white field
Consensus for livery colours is blue and white - background of garter plate however the torse and mantle colours which can be an indicator of livery colours are red and white (Nevill colours).

thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice, cheers Pete

Hi this is what  I've gone with for Fauconbery, fistly there's not a lot of information relating Wiliam Neville to go on [/img] so have had to use what is known. The Coat of arms is from his garter stall plate, The livery banner is in the Fauconberg livery colours and the Fish hook is based on surviing contemporary examples  - however ythe shape of fish hooks hasn't cjhanged much since the Romans.  The heraldic standard is in the Fauconberg colours (Simmonds) and the  bulls head central design is the family crest as seen above his arms on his garter plate stall and I'm pretty sure he would of been proud of and wanting to show off his Neville heritage. The white fish hooks provide consistency with livery banner however the colour's are not known however there is a suggestion the fishkooks may have been blue and white 'fretty'.  I did consider using the Neville livery colurs of red and white for the border but thought the blue and white option was a safer bet. Cheers Pete
