Recommendations for rust paint/ink/wash
« on: 28 February 2022, 04:53:42 PM »
Mine mix has almost run out and I didn't write it don when I mixed it oh so many years ago  ::)

Rather then waste time and paint I'm thinking I'd prefer to go with something off the shelf  :)

I should say that I've already got 'Typhus Corrosion' from GW and that's good for heavy rusting but I'm after something a bit more subtle.

Orange drawing Ink is, I think, a good
starting point.

IMO, I think it depends on what rust effect you're after.

With orc swords and axes, I went with a brown wash semi-mixed with orange rust paint and red blood paint. Brush strokes followed the direction of the chop!

With a post-apoc car, I speckled orange rust paint on bare metal (I think), then painted and washed it. Then I took an acrylic nail sponge file and sanded off the upper layer of paint until the lower rust appeared.

Vallejo Rust tones (from the Panzer Aces range) mixed with a very little gun metal and then thinned as necessary.

Second that with the Panzer Aces Rust tones. Tho Dags painting would be far superior to mine! AK interactive have a selection of weathers and washes might be worth an investigate.

I use this in Turps as I can subtly add to remove it while I am working on the model.

When I was in the states I loves this stuff.

You could increase the effect simply by applying another coat until you have the effect you are looking for.
Hope that helps.

Vallejo makes a couple of Rust Washes (dark and light) that are subtle.  Liquitex makes a few transparent acrylic inks (Sienna and Umber) that also work well.

Might I suggest a very different option: model railroading weathering powders (I believe ground up pastel like powder).

You apply as much or as little as you like and if you hate it, clean it off and wait until dry and start over.  When you do get what you want fix it in place with a good sealer.  But practice first before using on a master work!  Really - practice first.  Especially the part about the sealer.  Do it wrong and you can not only ruin the effect but create a streaky mess.

Thanks.

I’ll give these a go, cheers Jon  :)

AK Interactive rust effects, available in light, medium and heavy corrosion. Very good indeed.

The lifecolor rust and dust set is excellent.  Good coverage, very matt, and thins well for spotting and subtle streaking  effects.
Artists chalk pastels, ground up on 400 grit wet and dry paper are far cheaper, and much more effective, than model railway weathering powders.  They also come in a far greater range of colours.

I haven't done much in the way of rust for a while, back when I was making some GorkaMorka stuff years ago and a few pieces for another skirmish game, I'd found that you can take a small amount of fine sand and work it into a decent amount of a dark, dull red, you can stipple that on followed by a terracotta/red orange light drybrush, you can get a pretty decent rust effect.

For my undead, I've used more of a patina look for armor and weapons which I tend to like more there, and that's more of a paint in copper or bronze and then take a good patina color (mix one up or use some turquoise) and thin it down with rubbing alcohol rather than water to a bit thinner than normal for painting, and working it in. Tends to leave you with a more patina effect when it dries.
