How To: Bark Texture?
« on: 26 April 2022, 01:25:24 PM »
Has anyone successfully done a bark texture on a tree armature? If so, any pics of the final result? Also interested if anyone has links to any helpful sites or tutorials.

Thanks in advance.

You could use sponge onto your moulding media?

I don’t go that far with mine unfortunately……I just stipple on a little paint to represent lichen…bark etc.

On smaller trees I tend not to do bark.  I just wrap in floral tape and paint.  For big oak trees I wrap in floral tape to cover the wire and even out the surface then use latex acrylic caulking for the bark.  Texture is just a stiff disposable brush daubed until the pattern looks acceptable.  Knots and splits in the wood are modelled in milliput or green stuff before applying the caulking.  For my uses this is enough.  If you are building a diorama this will not be detailed enough.

Snitchy, that's FANTASTIC!  :o

This is the effect I'm trying to cover. So awful. I ordered a pink one to use approximate a cherry blossom tree. It looks like Garter Snake skin meets a garden hose.  ::)

I’m not sure how to get that specific effect but, for most barks, i make my own tool.  I pull out the hairs from an old brush and replace them with thin wire (fixed in place with a little bit of greenstuff inside the metal sleeve.

But you can also Google sculpting wire brush for more options.
