RAF Vehicle colours
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:46:10 PM »
I'm designing a colour scheme for an RAF (Royal Naval Air Service in my world) police car.

I remember seeing RAF vehicles in blue or green with yellow roofs, which I assume is to allow them to be seen from aircraft. I'm rather taken by this idea but I don't seem to be able to find any photographs at the moment which usually means I'm googling it wrong. Does anyone have any pictures of any such vehicles, especially small trucks or cars?

I guess it depends on the period.

The blue/yellow scheme, IIRC, is a post-war development from the mid-50s onwards, whereas before the war, vehicles were uniformly blue, followed by a switch to a combination of khaki green and tarmac in 1939 or 1940 (not exactly sure when), applied in the "Mickey Mouse" circular blot disruptive pattern.

I must confess I'm not being that true to the reality, not least because this is for some slightly eccentric Pulp games set in an alternative 1937, where military aviation is run by the Royal Naval Air Service, mostly using airships. I'm basically trying to figure how to paint a police car like this using the yellow roof scheme:
