6mm basing for Blucher
« on: 12 January 2024, 05:33:21 PM »
Folks, for a 5ft by 3ft table up to a 6ft by 4ft table what size bases would folks recommend for 6mm figures for a rule set such as Blucher? Would want bases to be small enough to be able to fit mid size battles but not so small that they look like 2 men and his dog.

Zingara, me and my mates are doing exactly this. We have opted for 70 x 35mm bases . These allow a 24 figure unit to be either in 3 ranks of 8 or 2 ranks of 12 plus a "skirmishing screen" and a mounted colonel off to one side. I'm sure other options are available.

Thanks SJWi. Twice as broad as deep - be good to see some pictures of them in action !

Thanks jon_1066 - good to see the link and battle in progress. Again a 2 : 1 frontage to depth. A number of sets opt for 1:1 for Brigade stands so interesting that the aesthetics consensus is 2:1.

Interesting suggestions. I have ended up with 64 x 44mm bases! But that is because I am using 60 x 20 strips on sabot bases, so that I can still use the troops for other rules like Black Powder. If I had been starting from scratch and basing solely for Blucher I would have used thinner bases, so probably 60 x 40.

Zingara, I have hopefully sent you some photos of my 70 x 35mm bases plus some 60 x 30 bases I use for ACW.  I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, albeit some rules do use "Base-widths" for distance so I guess the 5mm difference may be important to some people.

Thanks SJWi for the pictures - you've done a good job with those units, and others for their experiences / suggestions.

We still use 3” as the base width in the rules and it works fine still with the 60 mm.
