Piney's Wasteland Wonderland: A Necromunda Thread
« on: June 05, 2024, 06:02:10 PM »
Lady and Gentlemans!

I do so much work with munda (by far my favorite kind of terrain to make in a hobby where making terrain is my favorite part) that I decided to do myself a thread here. I'll likely get around to posting up old pictures of previous builds and will no doubt throw up batreps once the new hobby shop in my area opens up.

In the meantime, here's my latest build: Stop and Chew Station, a promethium refinery in the ash wastes run by my wife's candy-themed House Escher gang, The Bubble Gum B**ches (or Gals, if there's kids present).

As you can see I've started with a basic shape. The idea is to build a climbable series of shanties with multiple paths leading upwards.

I thought about doing a spindly climb upwards around the central refinery stack before I decided that have a larger base building would lead to a more fun play space. it even has a drive thru to pick up a Starchburger™ on your way to getting shot!

At this stage I'm trying to figure out the best placement of pipes to act as support for sky bridge housing to connect the three pillars without making the interior inaccessible. Suggestions are welcome and encouraged! More to come!

Love seeing this stage of a scratch build - always a great source of inspiration on what else can be hoarded under the hobby desk! This looks great; looking forward to seeing the finished piece to contrast it in its nude state. Plenty of LoS blockers and elevations always a good thing

I don't seem to have an instinct for sensible update schedules that demonstrate progress. I get into a rhythm of gluing and cutting and before I know it I've finished building and am about to start painting. Here it is: it wound up being a squat mine with a gas station on the bottom floor. I've never made something this deliberately vertical, it was a ton of fun. I apologize in advance for the giant un-cropped photos. I had no time to edit but I wanted to get them out!

Thanks! I'm pleased with my results here, after patiently hoarding bits so I could make a piece that really looks the part instead of more corrugated steel prefab!

Can't wait to see the finished piece; you're obviously High Priest of the Church of Gluing Crap together.

This already looks spectacular without paint.

Thanks all! Encouragement definitely helps me work up the gumption to paint. I used some aerosol glue on it with some
...weird results. Some bubbling of the plastic bits from GW kits, which I've never seen before. I'll chock it up to damage from storms.

It's a very minor update, but suffice to say, it is masking fluid time! I used 3 cans of matte primer and one small chrome primer can on this monstrosity and I'm still finding corners that didn't get hit with paint but I'll clean those up with craft paint once I start painting en masse.

Now rust is done as well. I use a craft paint mix of 1/3 yellow, 1/3 red, 1/3 burnt umber, and 50x the amount of water. It looks bright here but dries very subtly. The trick is to paint all of the cardboard/paper product areas in a 50/50 of modge podge and black craft paint before priming to seal the paper. Thank Eric's Hobby Workshop for the tips!

Bonus: can you spot the life-sized Juve in this picture?

This is some epic stuff, keep up the good work. One thing I learned from working alongside industrial painters is to do stripe coating (brush paint in all the hard to reach areas first) before spraying. I should really apply that lesson myself.  :D
