I recently tried 40k again... it is incredibly bloated and unbalanced, even compared to 2nd edition. It's not just special rules, it's 'synergies' then strategems, game missions and then mission cards during game... :(

Mcfonz, yeah it wasn't a fun experience and I tried to like 8th, 9th & 10th but not to the extent of going all in and buying loads of books luckily.
Mind you I didn't play them but 6th and 7th looked similar for the same sort of bloat to me.

Shame really they had a real chance of updating the rules, which they sort of did, but then buried them in a huge steaming pile of dodo guano  lol

Blech... That's why I never liked Warmachine after the first few waves either...

If I were to play 'proper'  40K again, I'd go back to early 3rd, back when things were still simple.

Or even better (and not 'proper'), I play Grimdark Future...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Well I stopped playing at 4th edition when it was still current but still enjoyed the system - just couldn't afford the GW prices, which have gotten worse and worse I'm afraid. I'm back in with 5th edition (and I'm not going any editions further than that) as it's still got a nice mix of playable rules and fun toys to play with, but doing it in 15mm with proxy models and it has been fun trying to sort out some models for the factions. I may cross over to Grim Dark at some point but I'm still ok with 40k.

Yeah, I think 3rd through to 5th were fairly similar and relatively unchanged. I could be wrong mind you.

I just remember the Imperial Guard doctrines that actually gave your army flavour whether it be a famous regiment and reflect their lore, such as Catachans, or to create a flavoursome army yourself. I liked the force organisation chart too, made armies somewhat "realistic" in that it was unlikely it'd be an army of just terminators, or huge nid bugs... That's what you get now.

I tried to play using my 'Nids and the whole wave of gaunts with heavy back up. Nope. Mostly all gone by turn 2. If you take mainly big bugs though... game on. That's not a 'Nid army to me then though. I'll stick to One Page Rules I think.

4th and 5th were broadly similar, tidying up a few rules here and there and trying to streamline the rules where needed. The biggest difference between 3rd and the later 2 editions was the complete overhaul of the assault rules (which, as I remember, was a huge deal at the time). I have a lot of nostalgia for 1st and 2nd edition but 3rd-5th is a very good game (whichever flavour of edition you prefer) and 6th onwards, imho, just adds extra rules and bigger, more expensive units for product turnover.

I can see that quite a lot of peoples thoughts echo mine, I started with Rogue Trader and had a lot of fun with it, went whole hearted into 2nd, but found I didn't really like it at all, all those fucking cards and bits  lol. Sound familiar eh. GW? Ditched all my old stuff including the RT stuff including both books of chaos (oh the sadness  :() and gave up wargaming mostly until a much streamlined 3rd edition came out and dragged me back in.

I probably played more games with 3rd than anything else, 3rd is the best for battles and RT is better for skirmishes. 2nd was something of a halfway mish-mash (I know some love it, but not I).

All of this rambling means that I say, just use whatever version you want, nick some of the bits from other versions and play how you want. I'm not doing tournaments etc, so who cares.

I am currently doing 40K 3rd and RT using Primaris marines and new terminators as true-scale Marines, but keeping vehicles like the Rhino and Land Speeder etc as is. Who cares if they are not big enough, they never were (Yes beloved Rhino, I am looking at you  lol).

Happy gaming one and all and even happy 40K-ing  ;) :D

Well as promised here are pictures of the new refurbished Land Speeder Uhu, leaving the hanger area on a nightime patrol in some warzone or other.

The Uhu leading its two squadron mates out on a night patrol front and side views. Note the Raptors symbol now applied.

Thanks for everyone's interest.

I miss 'the choppa rule' ... no matter your save, if an Ork hit you with a choppa, it was never better than 4+.  Man could I carve through some marines with that rule.  Consequently, they blew half my army to bits before I ever got a chance to hit them with the choppa, but ... that's the fun part, right?

Back to the Land Speeder.  I like it.  I've always had a soft spot for that model.  Simple, yet relatively easy to bash.  And just stock, it looked good on the table, and was actually close to being in scale.  You've done the world a service by saving that from eBay and bringing it back to some glory.

Well I`m still playing it lol, and the 3rd ed Orks always had that football hooligan in a fun sort of way about them  ;), and thanks for the kind words  :D I also think the Land Speeder is one of the most iconic Space Marine vehicles and I am pleased to have 3 now and a Storm for my squadron.
