A spot of Retrohammering, but not too intensely-pushed.
« on: May 25, 2025, 06:09:50 PM »
Hi all,

I mainly do "Nostalgia" projects these days (some on-and-off Newcromunda dalliance in the last few years notwithstanding), in that either the minis or the topic shall be from days of yore, and then I got myself a 3d printer earlier this year. Nothing fancy, but a remarkable machine that will be of great use in some particular areas and a distraction in others.

As a test piece, I designed myself a retro-style Ork dreadnought based on the Rogue Trader-era model. And once I had done that, I thought, "wouldn't it be nice to have some Orks to play with", and much rummaging ensued.

That and an order from Knightmare produced a nucleus of Space Orks, which I will continue on and off as I come across minis from the good old days. But I also have numerous Space Marines and some Chaos odds and ends that I'll paint intermittently. The general focus will be the Skittles-spewing clown car crash that I remember 2nd ed to be, and I probably won't be getting any games in, but who cares.

So, late to the party as always, but with a good old store of old minis that I never got rid of, I decided to do some Oldhammering this year. Not being too much in a mood to buy even more minis from the era, I'll follow my usual approach in using any bits and stuff that fit in stylistically - for the Orks, I'll see if I can find some Kev Adams and Perry Brothers sculpts from the days of 2nd ed, but not pursued too seriously, since that way lie madness and wailing wallets. Any vehicles I will most likely design and 3d-print.

As for painting, I actually aimed to be as intense as possible with my paints, but somehow it ended up a bit de-saturated. The Ork army will follow what I remember from back in the day, it being mainly Goffs in blacks, reds and checkers, with some colourful bits thrown in as I can find them.

Piccies, though, or it didn't happen!

An Ork boss to lead them, for the time being. This is a 3d design that I found on Thingiverse in the style of the old power armoured Nobz. Plus a Gretchin assistant to hand him snacks and/or grease squigs.

A Nobz mob, four of them from the wonderful Kev Adams-sculpted range from Knightmare. Pricey but nicey.

A Mekaniak from Knightmare, the aforementioned 3d-printed dread (with some plastic rivets and foil plating applied in places to add detail, as well as a warbike banner pole), and an interim Painboy until I get some proper figure for the role.

Mobs to follow!

On to the Mobs, 25% minimum of your points back in 2nd ed!

Some shooty Ork boyz, to be expanded as it goes.

Some choppy Ork boyz for melee.

A Runtherd and a bunch of Gretchin, the latter actually being from the starter box we got in early 1996. #neverthrowanythingaway #ifneededgetmorestorage

A mob of the wonderfully whimsical Kev Adams Gretchin he did for Knightmare.

Vehicles coming up!

And to provide some mobility, vehicles.

The wondrous Battlewagon from 1990. I got one second-hand back in the early 2000s and luckily never let go of it. Repainted bits here and there, added a new replacement banner pole and exhaust.

And finally a little armoured vehicle, which will stand in as either a warbuggy or a scorcha (the little trailer is detachable). This I designed in Tinkercad as well, partly to see how it would print - the hull is in halves, with the turret (magnetized), the wheels and some doodads added separately. Some plastic parts from the bits box help blend it in stylistically.

That's it for today. I hope you'll find this interesting. I've finished up most of the Orks for now (some additions to the mobs are still in line), and I'll see if I can find some more figures to add to it, but at a leisurely pace as noted above.

Most likely, this will mean Space Marines next.

Fantastic! Nostalgia overload!  ;D

Add: just caught the dread is a 3D print - nailed it for what it was back then, I used to have a bunch in my retro Grots themed army

Amazing work, and perfect timing for inspiration as I've just started converting some more Orks.

As for those old gretchin I painted 30 of them, just so I could field a unit of 30. ;D
There's a tub with another 50 or so, somewhere.

Thanks for the kind words, all.

The arms are all magnetized for positioning and swapping as needed, and I did alternative weapons (missile launcher and heavy flamer) to be on the flexible side.

Lucky man! Even those are hard to find these days this side of the Channel. But I'm holding out for an opportunity, I would like to be able to play the Skeletus River scenarios once more.

Nothing better than RT Orks (before they became the brutal and brainless freaks of modern 40k)!

The oldhammer style has a charm all it's own.

Hi all,

I painted up some more Orks to fill up the Mobz and add some characters.

Three boyz, one for the chop-chop and two for more dakka, although I probably should have read the 2ed army list beforehand in that Goffs are the only boyz who CANNOT have bolters. It's been too long. lol

I'll probably not repaint them, though. Unless I feel terribly bored and/or annoyed, in which case they'll probably become Evil Sunz as truck-mounted infantry.

As noted above, I wasn't particularly happy with the Painboy, and finally relented, opened an account with Myminifactory and bought a couple of STLs from Trollet Miniatures. This was printed in 0.05mm layer height as a single piece. As expected, the syringe snapped in handling afterwards so was replaced with a steel pin.

And finally, a new Warboss, also from Trollet Miniatures, which I had my eyes on for some month. This was rescaled to 85% of the original size-from-file and printed in 0.06mm layer height, in that the extra hours wouldn't really have made a difference to my aging eyes. Looks nice at arms length, and I love the little squig guy (sold separately). I just wished designers would split up such models into more separate parts, the head in particular might have benefitted from a different orientation, as was the case with the claw and gun where I hid some support scarring with leftover plastic bits.

Thanks for looking! Next up will be some more old metal figures and a couple of trukks, once those arrive in the mail.

I've got the warboss' name as Gorgof Grimblitz, unless I've translated it wrong.  ;D

Nice project.

May I enquire as to where the ork with the elongated  jaw comes from?

He's giving me massive Wayne England vibes and I'd very much like to add him to my collection.

That one was printed from a free sample STL which I found on Cults3d from a Patreon project. It was printed in 0.06mm layer height on a Bambu A1 filament printer.
