Thank you for your great answer, Hobgoblin.
I remember I played vanilla SoBH a decade ago, maybe I have the book or a pdf somewhere still...
The videos are stored to my playlist. I also watched content regarding OHSW, also interesting and worth trying. It seems to be a rule set that supports the "make believe" approach the kids already have when playing.

There is a free rules set specially made for Lego figures called BrikWars.
The basic rules look fairly simple, but I never played it so I don't know how good (or bad) it is.

How about Eureka Miniatures free Three Musketeers rules called "And one for all"?

https://www.eurekamin.com.au/games/AndOneForAll.pdf

They are quite simple but fun. I played them at Crisis on Vikotnik's board without prior knowledge and it went really smoothly without learning curve and many laughs were had. They are only four pages.

Legends of the High Seas uses the Lord of the Rings system. Pretty simple, and the rules have good scenarios.
Flashing Steel is also good if you just want a few figures a side.

Battle blade by Echidna Games might be worth a look, not explicitly written for pirates but easily adaptable and super simple.

I played two games of OHSW with the kids and of course the games ran good. The game is very easy, for my taste a bit too easy. I'm no expert in creating nice scenarios and our encounter felt a bit lifeless. It was a bit dull not having a difference in armament, pirates played exactly like the soldiers. Except that the soldiers had muskets and thus a big advantage over the pistol-armed pirates.

And the kids would like to shoot cannons. We have ships, we have coastal batteries, we have islands. The sets we have cry for navigating with ships and have sea to sea or sea to coast fights. Boarding actions. I think Blood and Plunder is the game scope I would think would be good but I think it is way too complicated. I saw a ship card and yeah, not with kids.

So, Blood and Plunder but easier for kids. We have to use those cannons and sail around islands. :)

No one?

No experiences with "On the Seven Seas"?

Or is it possible to make Blood&Plunder easier?

Legends of the High Seas? Has it ship-to-ship combat?
Where can I get the rules?

From memory it was ship-to-ship. The rules are out of production. There are overpriced versions on eBay, and a copy on Scribd

OHSW may seem overly simplistic, but remember in the black powder era, it costs two points to fire any weapon.  That does cause one to make some decisions, move, fire, or melee.  I make can cost three points by the way.
And honestly, I still highly recommend Fistful of Lead or Pulp Alley.  The latter especially would work well with kids.

Brikwars is a wargame designed to be played with Lego, and to be simple for anyone to pick up. It’s not specifically pirate themed but it is a lot of fun.
