Skirmish Scenarios for ECW and TYW
« on: 16 October 2024, 08:13:55 PM »
Are there any publications or books on scenarios for skirmishes in ECW and TYW.
Thanks in advance.

Calvin, are you after 1-1 figure games or "small battles"? Also strictly "historical" games or fictional?  Caliver Books produce 4 booklets of "English Civil War Scenarios" at £18.99 each. I think they all cover 12 battles with maps and ORBATs. Some of these are relatively small-scale.

SJWi thank you for your answer. I am currently interested in 1 on 1 for skirmishes not exceeding more than twenty or thirty figurines. Whether historical or fictional. But with the references of the books that you communicated to me, I think I can find my happiness.

Calvin, to be honest haven't heard that you want true 1-1 figure skirmish I would think twice before buying any of the books I have listed.

I agree with SJWi the scenario books from Partizan are wonderful but definitely geared towards battles, though some of them are quite small. Partizan does have a book of cavalry based scenarios some of which could be done with 40-60 figures aside but I am not sure you would find it good value for money.

Thanks again for your answers. I went to the Caliver Book website and the different booklets are rather battles of varying sizes.
I asked the question to get out of the simple scenario of the convoy attacked, or even a surprise city gate.
But hey I'm keeping this series under wraps which could be useful to me, because besides the skirmishes that I would like to do with my boyfriend, we each have a royal and parliamentary army.

Take a look in the local history section in your library, you might find inspiration there. I have four books on the civil wars in Worcestershire plus further books on Gloucestershire and Stratford-upon-Avon all with snippets of history that will form my scenarios.

Thank you Paul, but the problem is that I remain in France and that in the media library of my city, there is very little and even almost nothing over the ECW period. Apart from the biographies of Charles 1er and Cromwell. This is why I called on the members of this forum.

There are a few scenarios in the ECW skirmish rulebooks I mentioned earlier. You could also adapt some of the Warhammer Skirmish scenarios, and the scenarios from the Cry Havoc meieval skirmish board game (most of which can be found online).

Calvin, you might look at the Osprey "En Garde" rules which are small scale 16/17th century "swashbuckling skirmish" rules. They have 8 very generic scenarios but they need "flesh putting on the bones". I plan to use these for my 3 Musketeers games. Caliber Books also sell a set of ECW skirmish rules called "Once Upon a Time in the West Country" by Pete Berry. They are quite old but pretty cheap. I don't know if they have any scenario ideas.

Calvin, as already suggested the Partizan scenario books are very good (don't forget the siege rules/scenario book too). But they do tend to focus on the larger engagements.

If you want a list of scenarios for each book see https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2022/07/partizan-scenario-books.html

If you use Facebook have a look at the Battlefields Trust page, they often describe many smaller engagements in 'on this day' posts. Certainly give you enough information to design your own scenarios without the expense and difficulty of stocking your own library.

I would suggest looking at the old Featherstone skirmish game books. Or any pre-Napoleonic skirmish scenario books. You should be able to adjust them to the period. Maybe even The Silver Bayonet could be a source.

With a little delay I come to thank you Radar for the suggestions you gave me. I took the plunge and ordered the first booklet of ECW scenarios. In any case it will be useful to me since I play a royal army against my friend.

Thank you Khusru2 for your suggestion for Silver Bayonnet, I think that I could also find my happiness in ambush scenarios.
