Pulp Alley Dungeon Crawl with old D&D board game
« on: 19 November 2024, 04:50:01 PM »

At the weekend I was tasked with looking through the board games for some that we don’t play any more that could be sold on Ebay to make a little more space for other hobby stuff. A good plan. I’d not looked through the collection in quiet a while. I noticed that I had quiet a few board games with miniatures such as Warhammer Quest, Hero Quest, Dungeon Saga, HeroClix, Zombicide and the Dungeons and Dragons Board game from 2003.

We played the D&D board game a lot when it first came out, but in all honesty I’ve probably not looked inside the box in the last 15 years. I decided that rather than the task in hand, I would have a look inside the box. This filled me with nostalgia. The miniatures are 21years old and are ‘of there time’. The game came with 40 miniatures cast in a softish plastic. I wondered how there cartoony style would respond to a quick lick of Army Painter Speed Paint. I guess by the time I’d cut them off there plastic bases and spray undercoated them I was sold on a new ‘recycling’ project

I've put together a Pulp Alley scenario together with character cards and scenario cards that enables play of the first scenario from the board game, either using the board game components or other fantasy miniatures and terrain.

Interested to hear your thoughts. Please let me know if you try the scenario and if you have any ideas to improve the characters of the concept of Pulp Allet Dungeon Crawl!

All the components can be downloaded from my hobby blog article!

Fun! We played a lot of fantasy Pulp Alley a few years ago. It does lend itself well to it.

Yesterday Mike & I got together to give the ideas that I had mentioned in my Reuse & Recycle blog about using some old board games such as the 2003 Dungeons & Dragons board game as the basis for a Pulp Alley Dungeon Crawl game. We played the first scenario from the D&D campaign, ‘The Goblin Bandits’, as a 2 player (versus) style game. This worked well, but I think the big win is going to be solo gaming, using the Pulp Alley solo deck to give an ‘intelligent opponent’. I will try to give this a go at the weekend, and let you know how it goes!

Mike brought along a Dwarven League rather than using the D&D adventuring party and reimagined the scenario as a group of Dwarves attempting a heist on the vaults under Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Mike’s Dwarf models are from North Star’s Oathmark range.

We put a few special scenario rules together, including this card for dealing with dungeon doors. All the cards are available to download from the article links.
